Elon Phoenix Volleyball Falls to Cougars in Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Falling just short in the first two sets, the Elon volleyball team was not able to overcome the deficit, dropping a match 3-0 (24-26, 25-27, 15-25) at College of Charleston today, Nov. 5, in TD Arena.

The Phoenix (17-13, 3-10) was led by nine kills from Ally Karle followed by another eight kills from Kam Terry. Sydel Curry tallied 33 assists, while Kayla Agae finished with three aces. On defense, Maddie Jaudon recorded a match-high 18 digs and Sydney Busa added another 13. Karle posted three total blocks followed by another two from Alexa Pavlick.

CofC (16-10, 9-5) saw a match-high 14 kills from Krissy Mummey and another 10 kills from Riana Brennan. Allison Beckman recorded 38 assists, while McKala Rhodes added 18 digs.

How it Happened
The Phoenix used a strong offensive start to move out to an early 8-4 advantage in the first set after a kill by Ebony Scott to force a Charleston timeout. Three kills by Karle helped extend the lead to as much as seven, 17-10, before the Cougars closed the gap to two, 18-16. Elon reached set point, 24-18, but CofC mounted an impressive comeback to score eight straight and take a 26-24 win.

After Charleston claimed a 13-7 edge to start the second set, the maroon and gold used kills by Terry and Pavlick, a block by Busa and Pavlick and a Terry ace to score four straight and pull within two, 13-11. Kills by Pavlick and Terry and an Erin Kelly ace evened the score at 14-all. The set saw four more ties before a solo block by Karle gave the Phoenix set point, 24-23. A Karle kill kept Elon in front, 25-24, before the Cougars claimed the final three points to win, 27-25.

Elon took a quick 6-3 lead in the third set with the help of an ace and kill by Agae. A kill by Busa kept the Phoenix in the lead, 12-10, before Charleston evened the set, 12-all. The maroon and gold was forced to call a timeout after the Cougars moved in front by two, 14-12. From there, CofC managed an 8-1 run to extend its lead, 23-13. Kills by Karle and Agae halted the Cougars for a time but it was not enough as Charleston took the set, 25-15, and the match.
