GREENSBORO, N.C. – Sophomore Alston Thompson and Marcus Curry posted double-doubles in Guilford College’s 62-59 basketball win over Greensboro College Tuesday night in the Greensboro Coliseum.

The Quakers collected a school-record 67 rebounds, 27 on the offensive glass, in their sixth straight victory over their city rival.

Neither team looked especially sharp in their first official contest, but both squads played with intensity down the stretch. The Quakers tried repeatedly to pull away throughout the game, but each time Greensboro rallied to keep things interesting.

After a Donavan Griffith basket tied the score at 41-41 with 11 minutes left, Guilford reeled off seven straight points and seemed in control with nine minutes remaining. Two minutes later, the Pride’s Christopher Corbin drained a three-pointer, which made it a 49-48 contest.

Guilford’s Carson Long delivered a key bucket with 3:20 remaining to give the Quakers a 56-52 edge. Guilford did not make a field goal the rest of the way, but made just enough free throws down the stretch to seal the victory. A Corbin layup with 13 seconds left made it a 61-59 game. Greensboro quickly fouled Jarrod Rogers who made one of two free throws for a three-point lead. Terrance Outing’s three-point shot at the buzzer was off the mark.

Thompson led Guilford with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Curry chipped in with 11 points and 10 boards off the bench in his Quakers’ debut. Guilford senior Zachary Houston grabbed a career- and game-high 16 rebounds and distributed four assists. Long added nine points and six rebounds.

Griffith led all scorers with 15 points and also had 13 rebounds, but also turned the ball over five times. Joseph Gatling had 11 points for the Pride, who registered 13 blocked shots. Corey Burnette had six rejections.

Coach Tom Palombo’s Quakers host the Guilford College Invitational this weekend beginning Friday (11/18). Guilford opens tourney play at 7:00 p.m. versus the University of Texas-Dallas.
