GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College’s Heaven Walters (Elkin, N.C./Starmount) led all scorers with 14 points as the Quakers claimed a Sunday afternoon victory in day two of the Guilford College Classic over Elmira College, 76-42. Bridgewater College claimed the day’s first victory with an 80-50 win over MacMurray College.
The Quakers jumped to a 16-2 run to start the first 5:27 of the first quarter, sinking eight of the contests first nine field goals. The Quakers kept the lead in double-digits throughout the rest of the period as Guilford held an 18-4 advantage in the paint through one period.
Guilford extended the lead to 15 points early in the second period thanks to two Amy Steller (Advance, N.C./Davie/Pfeiffer) field goals, the Quakers’ first two of the quarter. The Quakers closed the final 5:12 of the period on a 14-4 run. Playing a variety of players off the bench, the Quakers still held the advantage in the paint, 14-6, during the period.
Guilford extended that run into the third quarter, enlarging the run to 26-4, by scoring the quarter’s first 12 points, powered by Anais Weatherly’s (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mount Tabor) six points on three consecutive baskets and Walters’ four points. The Quakers’ lead hit 36 points twice in the period and eventually hit 37 points with 1:15 remaining as Guilford’s bench scored 13 points in the period.
The Quakers’ largest lead hit 39 points 17 seconds into the fourth quarter as Guilford began to primarily play their reserves. The Quakers held the Soaring Eagles scoreless in a 3:31 stretch in the middle portion of the period as Guilford cruised to victory.
Walters added seven rebounds and seven assists to her 14-point effort on five-of-six shooting. Weatherly, named the Guilford College Classic’s Most Valuable Player, finished with 14 points on seven-of-ten shooting while adding seven steals. Essence Abraham (Greensboro, N.C./Dudley) represented the final Quakers’ player in double-figure scoring with ten points on four-of-eight shooting, including a three-pointer at the buzzer to end the first half. Addy Lemons added six points and nine rebounds off the bench.
Lindsay Heaton and Rachel Vespucci led the Soaring Eagles with nine points a piece while Vespucci tallied nine rebounds. Danielle Cleary added eight points and four assists.
The Quakers shot 53.1 percent from the field, including 57.1 percent shooting in the first half. The Soaring Eagles shot 28.1 percent for the contest, shooting nine-of-32 (28.1 percent) in each individual half.
The Quakers crushed Elmira in the paint, holding a 50-18 advantage. Guilford’s bench held a decisive 30-4 advantage over Elmira’s reserves while the Quakers converted 26 Elmira turnovers into 21 points. Elmira converted 21 Guilford miscues into 14 points.
Bridgewater jumped to an 18-6 advantage in the day’s first contest as the Eagles forced 29 MacMurray turnovers, converting the Highlanders’ miscues into 26 points. Jessica Lam led all scorers in the first contest with 27 points on 12-of-17 shooting. Destyne Powell was the lone MacMurray player in double-figure scoring with 12 points. Bridgewater held a 50-26 edge in the paint while shooting 41 percent from the field compared to the Highlanders’ 34 percent.
The Quakers (3-0) open Old Dominion Athletic Conference play Tuesday, hosting Randolph College for a 7 p.m. contest inside Ragan-Brown Field House.
