Students From Community School Of Davidson & Wallace-Rose Hill Earn Performance Of The Week Awards

CHAPEL HILL — Emme Nelson from Community School of Davidson and Maynor Espinoza from Wallace-Rose Hill High School have been named recipients of the NCHSAA Performance of the Week awards, powered by Time Warner Cable SportsChannel.

Each week two athletes in North Carolina High School Athletic Association competition are selected for this award from nominations received from media and school administrators.

Nelson, a freshman on the Spartans swim team, impressed in the squad’s first swim meet of the season and her first high school competition. At the Cavalier Kickoff against schools from all four classifications, Nelson took first place in the 200 I.M. as well as the 100 Breaststroke with new team records. Her times also were good enough to qualify automatically for the NCHSAA Regionals. She also led off the 200 Freestyle Relay with a new team record in the 50 Free and the 400 Freestyle relay with a new team record in the 100 Free, both in regional qualifying times.

Espinoza, a senior at Wallace-Rose Hill, led the Bulldog soccer team to the 1A State Championship as they beat Bishop McGuinness 3-1 in the final match. Espinoza scored the final goal of the match, and his 84th of the year in the late stages of the contest. The goal gave him 214 career goals and broke the NFHS National Record for goals scored in a career.

TWC SportsChannel typically announces the winners of the awards during its Sports Night show and will recognize the winners throughout the week. Weekly recipients will also be recognized via Twitter and Facebook. The deadline for nominations is each Monday at 5 p.m through the online form that can be found here.
