College Basketball Final – Guilford 71, Averett 56 (with Pictures)

DANVILLE, Va. – Marcus Curry scored 19 points and Carson Long added 12 in Guilford College’s 71-56 road basketball win at Averett University Tuesday night.

The Quakers (3-1) held the host Cougars (1-3) to under 30 percent field-goal shooting in their third win in seven days.

Dominique Henderson and P.J. Stephens triggered an 18-6 Guilford run midway through the opening half, which turned a 14-14 game into a 32-20 Quakers’ edge. Curry made all three of his first-half field goals and led all scorers with eight points at halftime.

An Acchaeus Fields three-pointer with 13:34 left in regulation brought the resurgent Cougars to within 43-38, but the Quakers reeled off the game’s next 10 points and never looked back. Curry scored four points during the streak, which effectively put the game out of reach. Guilford’s lead grew to as many as 21 points in the second half as the hosts managed just 33 percent (9-27) shooting from the floor and turned the ball over 10 times.

Curry keyed a 40-22 Guilford advantage in bench scoring. The Quakers also outrebounded Averett, 46-33, and had 16 offensive boards that led to 16 second-chance points. Zachary Houston led the glass cleaners with nine caroms and also had three assists and steals. Alston Thompson (8 points) and Long added six rebounds apiece. Thompson had three of Guilford’s five blocked shots.

Fields led Averett with 14 points off the bench. T.J. McAllister added nine points and three assists. Charles Bryant collected a team-high eight rebounds.

Coach Tom Palombo’s Quakers open Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play November 30 at 5:30 p.m. versus visiting Eastern Mennonite University.
