College Women’s Basketball Final – Guilford 86, Randolph 48

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College’s Anais Weatherly (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mount Tabor) notched her second double-double of the season as the Quakers claimed a Tuesday evening Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory over Randolph College, 86-48.

Weatherly finished with 17 points and ten rebounds on six-of-nine shooting while notching seven assists and four steals. She amassed her statistics while only playing the first three quarters of the contest.

Both teams played tight defense in the first five minutes of the contest as the WildCats held the Quakers (4-0, 1-0 ODAC) to just a three-point lead, 9-6. The Quakers began to create distance in the latter portion of the period, squeaking out a 7-2 run to end the period.

Randolph closed the lead to five after the first two minutes of the second quarter, but the Quakers countered with a 6-0 run over a 3:53 span of the period to hold the WildCats. After three-straight points from Randolph, the Quakers mounted a 14-3 run to close the period as Guilford closed the run making the last three shots.

The Quakers opened the third quarter sinking seven of their first nine shots as they began to widen their lead. Guilford produced a 13-2 run in the first 3:53 of the quarter to widen their lead to 30 points. The WildCats countered with a 5-0 run for the next 26 seconds before the Quakers continued their dominance with a 7-0 run over the next 1:30. Guilford closed the period with a 34-point lead in a quarter where the Quakers shot 62.5 percent from the field while dishing nine assists in the period. Randolph only shot 26.7 percent.

Guilford hit their largest lead of the contest with 2:08 left in the fourth quarter when a three-point play from Essence Abraham (Greensboro, N.C./Dudley) bolstered the Quakers’ advantage. Guilford shot eight-of-11 in the period while Randolph shot six-for-15.

Five other Quakers outside of Weatherly notched double-figure scoring efforts led by Heaven Walters (Elkin, N.C./Starmount), who tallied 12 points on five-of-six shooting while dishing four assists. Amy Steller (Advance, N.C/Davie/Pfeiffer) added 12 points on three-of-seven shooting with two steals while Jordyn Brown added ten points on five-of-seven shooting. Kate Clark and Abraham also added ten points a piece off the bench.

Kiana Scott led Randolph scorers with nine points off the bench as the Quakers held the WildCats’ starters to just 13 points. Darian Thronton added seven points and four rebounds off the bench.

The Quakers finished the contest shooting 54.7 percent from the field while the WildCats shot 29.1 percent. Randolph edged Guilford at the foul line as the WildCats shot 14-of-19 compared to the Quakers’ 12-of-19.

The Quakers out-rebounded the WildCats, 38-33, with Randolph holding a slight edge on the offensive glass, 11-9. The Quakers forced 25 turnovers compared to Randolph forcing 15 on Guilford’s end with the Quakers holding a 33-12 advantage in points off of turnovers. Guilford also dominated in the paint, 46-20.

The Quakers enjoy the Thanksgiving weekend off before returning to action Monday, hosting Meredith College for a 7 p.m. contest inside Ragan-Brown Field House.
