High Point Volleyball heads to No. 7 UNC for NCAA First Round

HIGH POINT, N.C. – After claiming its second ever Big South Championship, the High Point University volleyball team is heading to Chapel Hill, N.C. on Friday at 6:30 p.m. to take on No. 7 North Carolina in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Panthers (23-9) ran through the Big South Tournament last weekend in Lynchburg, Va. beating UNC Asheville and host Liberty before besting top-seeded Radford to lock up a spot in the NCAA Tournament.

The winner of Friday’s match will take on the winner of James Madison and Coastal Carolina on Saturday in Chapel Hill, N.C.

The program’s other trip to the NCAA Tournament came in 2010. That year, the Purple & White took on No. 12 Duke and fell in three sets.

What They Said:

Head coach Tom Mendoza on seeing High Point University pop up:
“The selection process is a little different in years that you win your conference because there’s a certainly to it; your name is coming up at some point. They made us wait a little bit, but getting to see our student-athletes’ reaction is exciting to see. They have worked hard to earn this and they were excited to see High Point University pop up.”

Redshirt-senior Savannah Angel on High Point making the first tournament appearance in her career:
“This was one of the most nerve-racking experiences in my career just waiting to see our name come up. We kind had some idea of where we were going to play, but just constantly waiting to see those letters is a really exciting experience.”
