MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – Freshman Camryn Brown posted a career day as the High Point University women’s basketball team fell 82-59 to No. 19 West Virginia in the WVU Coliseum on Sunday.
Brown scored 11 first-quarter points as the Panthers (1-4) trailed the Mountaineers (7-0) 28-22 after the first period. From there, WVU was able to extend its lead to 14 at the break, but never truly ran away from the young Purple & White squad.
“I’m proud of our squad’s effort against a very good West Virginia team,” head coach DeUnna Hendrix said. “We played fearlessly, confidently and as a team. Despite the score, we made huge strides as a team today. Our goal is to continue to build on this going forward.”
Brown’s 11 points in the first quarter were one point shy of a career-high she set on Tuesday against UAB. By halftime, the Copley, Ohio native had eclipsed that mark with 13 points. In total, the guard finished the afternoon with 19 points, five assists and six rebounds.
Likewise, the Panthers received huge contributions from its wings. Sophomore Emma Bockrath racked up nine points, seven rebounds, five assists and two steals. Meanwhile, sophomore Lindsey Edwards added a season-high 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the floor.
Despite coming off the bench, Brown and Edwards combined for 35 points and 13 of the squad’s 21 made field goals.
Rounding out the scoring, junior Kat Harris knocked down two three-pointers and two free throws to notch eight points while sophomore Shea Morgan chipped in with seven.
Facing a significant height disadvantage, HPU was outrebounded by just eight (42-34) as Morgan and sophomore Taylor McGlashan pulled down five apiece.
The Panthers hit 21-of-59 shot attempts (35.6 percent), but still shot nearly 10 percentage points better than the Mountaineers allowed on the year entering today.
Four early turnovers by the Purple & White allowed WVU to grab a 6-0 lead, However, Brown came off the bench to score nine of the next 13 HPU points to make it 19-13. The teams traded baskets the rest of the way as the game entered the second period with WVU leading 28-22.
Morgan’s free throw forty second into the second quarter cut the deficit to five (28-23) before the Mountaineers responded with a 9-0 run to take a 14-point edge with 6:39 before the break.
However, a couple baskets from Edwards pulled High Point back within 10 (37-27, 5:54) before WVU regained a 14-point advantage before halftime (45-31).
Once again, the home team came out of the locker room hot scoring the half’s first eight points to go up by a score of 53-31. Bockrath, then, got HPU on the board in the third with a three-point play to make it 53-34. Later, the Panthers would get the deficit down to 18 on Harris’ second three-pointer (61-43, 0:47) before WVU scored to enter the final frame with a 20-point edge.
In the fourth quarter, the Panthers cut the lead beneath 20 on three occasions, but couldn’t get any closer than 18 as the Mountaineers held on for a 82-59 victory.
The Purple & White return home from the three-game road trip to host Norfolf State in the Millis Center at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. The team will then host Stetson on Saturday at 2 p.m. as a part of a double-header with the men’s basketball team playing at 7 p.m.
