College Women’s Basketball Final – Guilford 77, Meredith 48

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College’s Anais Weatherly (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mount Tabor) notched her third double-double of the season in five games as the Quakers claimed a Monday evening victory over Meredith College, 77-48

The Avenging Angels held a 7-4 lead after the first 3:12 of the first quarter as the opening period featured five ties. The Quakers took charge in the final 3:46 of the period with a 10-3 run, closing the period with their largest lead of the quarter, five points.

Meredith kept the Guilford lead within single-digits as they closed the lead to within three points 2:30 into the second quarter. The Quakers extended their lead to eight points at the half-way mark of the period and extended the advantage to nine points with three minutes left. The Quakers pushed the lead to ten points entering halftime as the Quakers closed the period with a 12-4 advantage in the paint within the second quarter and a 6-0 edge in second-chance points during the period.

The Avenging Angels cut the lead to seven points with 7:17 left in the third quarter, but the Quakers responded with a 17-2 run throughout the rest of the third quarter, closing the period with their largest lead at 22 points. Guilford held a commanding 14-0 third-quarter edge in points off of turnovers, a strong 12-2 edge in the paint, and an 8-0 advantage on second-chance points.

Guilford’s bench shined in the fourth quarter as the Quakers’ reserves out-dueled the Meredith bench, 15-5. The Quakers’ lead bounced back and forth between 21 and 23 points throughout the first portion of the period before the Quakers closed out the contest with their largest lead of the night, 29 points, while securing the victory.

Weatherly finished with 16 points on eight-of-18 shooting. She added 11 rebounds, five assists, and four steals. Two other Quakers posted double-figures in scoring with Lauren Ramsey (Lexington, N.C./North Davidson) notching 15 points on seven-of-13 shooting with three rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Heaven Walters (Elkin, N.C./Starmount) amassed 11 points on five-of-15 shooting while dishing five assists. Jordyn Richardson (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mount Tabor/Catawba) notched eight points on four-of-five shooting in ten minutes off the bench.

Amy Rhoney led the Avenging Angels with 14 points and seven rebounds on six-of-11 shooting while blocking five shots. Jessi Hayes was the remaining Meredith player in double-figure scoring with ten points and nine rebounds.

The Quakers shot 41.5% from the field, including 50-percent shooting in the second quarter. The Avenging Angels shot 36.7 percent from the field, only shooting two-for-six in the entire third quarter while shooting 42.9 percent in the second quarter. The Avenging Angels shot 8-of-22 (36.4 percent) from the foul line while Guilford shot six-for-eight (75 percent).

Guilford ended the contest with a decisive 40-18 advantage in the paint. The Quakers also dominated in points off of turnovers, 23-4, as Guilford only committed eight turnovers compared to Meredith’s 21. Guilford held a strong 20-4 advantage on second-chance points while out-rebounding the Avenging Angels, 49-36, thanks to 19 offensive rebounds for Guilford compared to six for Meredith.

The Quakers (5-0) return to the court tomorrow, traveling to North Carolina Wesleyan College for Guilford’s first road game of the season. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
