College Men’s Basketball Final- Guilford 94, Eastern Mennonite 88 (OT) with Photos

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Carson Long scored six of his game- and career- high 32 points in overtime of Guilford College’s 94-88 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men’s basketball win over visiting Eastern Mennonite University Wednesday night.

The Quakers (4-1, 1-0 ODAC) overcame Eastern Mennonite’s (2-2, 0-1 ODAC) school-record 18 three-point shots in a school-record 45 attempts. Jerome Jones’ three-pointer with five seconds left in regulation tied the game at 81-81, forced the extra period, and completed a Royals’ rally from a 10-point deficit early in the second half.

After shooting 10-of-18 (55.6%) in the second half, Eastern Mennonite made just one of five tries from beyond the arc in overtime. Guilford, which shot 53.6% from the field, made four-of-five of its field goals in the extra frame. A Long jumper followed by Dominique Henderson’s traditional three-point play gave the Quakers an 86-81 edge 1:25 into overtime.

Isaiah Harris-Winn answered at the other end to get Eastern Mennonite back to within 86-83 and hit his fifth and final trifecta of the night that made it an 89-86 contest with 46 seconds left. Guilford broke the ensuing full-court press, which led to a Long dunk at the other end. A Zachary Houston steal on Eastern Mennonite’s next possession forced the Royals to foul Jarrod Rogers with 25 seconds left. The junior made both shots, which opened a 93-86 margin and effectively iced the game.

Long made 15-of-20 shots from the floor, including two three-pointers, in his second 30-point game of the year. He also collected seven rebounds, five offensive, and added three steals and a blocked shot. Henderson drained eight-of-10 shots, including both three-point tries, and finished with21 points, one shy of a career high. He also had six rebounds and four assists. Rookie Mason Reyer knocked down three three-pointers off the bench and scored a career-high 12 points. Houston scored three points, but shared game-high honors with nine rebounds, and had six assists and two steals.

Harris-Winn’s five three-pointers helped him to a team-best 27 points. Travis Clower made four-of-five triples and scored 13 points off the bench, a figure matched by ReShawn Latimer. Despite foul trouble, Jones finished with 12 points, a game-high nine rebounds and two steals. Khalil Davis chipped in eight points, a game-high seven assists and just one turnover in 38 minutes.

Coach Tom Palombo’s Quakers visit league-rival Hampden-Sydney College Saturday (12/3) at 2:00 p.m.
