Second Half Streak Lifts Pride Women Past Salem In Home Opener

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Rasheika Gregory scored a team-high 16 points as the Greensboro College women’s basketball team defeated Salem College in its home opener Monday, 78-47.

The Pride (2-4) and the Spirits (2-5) traded the lead early until Greensboro used a 9-4 run to establish at 18-13 lead with nine minutes left in the second period. Katie Lewis(Southeast Guilford High School), who finished with 15 points, accounted for five points during the span, while Gregory added the remaining four points.

Salem then battled back once again to tie the game at 23 before Greensboro took a 27-25 lead into halftime.

When the two teams came back for the second half, Greensboro looked like a very different team as they outscored the Spirits 41-6 over the first 12 minutes of the second half, taking a 70-33 lead. Kylee Barry, who hit three three-pointers during the streak, had a team-high 11 points during the run, while Marla Crawford chipped in nine points.

Salem then pulled within 74-47 following a 12-3 run, but Shamara Richardson scored the game’s final two buckets to secure the 31-point victory.

“I think our girls did a good job showing enthusiasm and energy for the full forty minutes tonight,” Head Coach Randy Tuggle said. “This is one of the things that we have been stressing the past couple of weeks, and we showed that tonight as everyone that came into the game contributed in one way or another.

“Our depth really played to our advantage tonight as we had nine players record double-digit minutes. Now we have to get ready for another tough opponent Wednesday.”

Monica Smalls finished with seven points and eight rebounds, while Kamerin Williams added a team-leading 12 rebounds. The Pride outrebounded the Spirits 54-33, with 25 offensive rebounds resulting in 19 second chance points.
