Adam Clay out as Western Guilford football coach, might be time to bring in Chuck Henderson and bring back Doug Henderson

Adam Clay, the two-year head football coach for the Western Guilford Hornets has stepped down and the search is on for a new coach for the Hornets…Coach Clay went (5-17) overall and (4-8) conference in his two years in charge of the WG football program, after serving for six seasons as an assistant coach under former WG leader Chris Causey, who is now the AD at WG and he will be charged once again with naming a new football coach…

Read more on the Adam Clay coaching stint at WG when you CLICK HERE for Spencer Turkin over the News and Record…

Western Guilford had just three coaches for a 50-year span, with Joe Robinson, Doug Henderson and Charlie Griffin being the bosses and now we are in a different day at Western Guilford and all over the Guilford County landscape…There is a different culture in football today and you have to be a step ahead of the game, to get ahead and stay ahead…

I can remember back in the day at Western Guilford if you didn’t win half of your games, you may as well not go home in mid-November, because you would be shamed out of your household and your neighborhood…It was all about winning and I remember a period when our old Hornets went something like 21-9 over three years and didn’t even make the playoffs, because back in those days, only the Conference Champion from the regular season was allowed to participate…

WG is looking for a new direction and some would say they might be making the right move if Western Guilford brought in Chuck Henderson and had his dad, Doug Henderson, step and be what we can in the business, “a behind the scenes consultant”….Chuck Henderson has gone (16-29) in his four years at Lexington HS and if he did come to WG, he might be able to recreate some of that ‘Henderson Magic’…

Maybe some do not want to go backwards, but I can show you the Western Guilford of yesterday and it is just down the road about five miles and that is Northwest Guilford….NWG reminds me of what WG was back in the day…Upstart, upscale and up-and-coming….

Hey they say you can’t go home again, but really where is home these days and will we see a Chuck Henderson, a Doug Henderson or a new Bill Hollifield at Western Guilford in the near future?????

And you might say, “why do you keep on bringing up those names from the past?”….Hey, in the past you had winning teams and winning tradition and we have all found at more school than one, it is very hard to recreate previous successes…

I would like to hear from some of those old Hornets and see where they place their hopes for the future and everybody has those dreams, we wake up every day and those dreams are present…..

Present coach at Western Guilford….Position OPEN and apply at the Guilford County Schools web site…..
Future Coach at Western Guilford….Your guess is as good as mine, but I just feel like sharing mine/my ideas with the anyone that will read this copy….

*****Now what gives me the right to be a part of this discussion????? I have been in the concussion protocol since I first attended that “Bill Hollifield School of Hard Knocks”, many moons ago….*****

  1. Coach Fritz might be a good suggestion…He and coach Causey know each other from being in school near about the same time at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill…Both were on the football team there as well at UNC…

Coach Fritz would bring a hard-nosed culture to WG and that might be something that could help in building the WG program…

Also Doug Henderson is a UNC grad and the UNC grad and Guilford College Quaker connections have always seemed to work well for Western…

Former Page Pirate and Marshall Thundering Herd player Chris Jasperse was over at WG this past season as the line coach and I would like to see them be able to keep him around to work with the lines…He is big and that gets kids’ attention these days…

I am thinking of starting a campaign to promote me as the Top Lineman to ever come out of Western Guilford and may need to hold Coach Henderson to ground to get him to admit it, but it would help me in my promotional appearances for football purposes…

I know this program from the past and many say these days that the past has passed us by, but I love it back in the day when we ran more than we passed…

The key to football is simple, it comes down to blocking and tackling…And all of that starts in weight room…Back in the day you never got called for holding or false starts…If you had to and weren’t sure of the snap count you started a little bit late instead of early and the only penalties you received were for late hits and not for stupid holding….

Who had to hold anybody, you just drove your man down the field, just like driving the sled…

I don’t think football has changed all that much…It is a lot like the Hansen Brothers used to say, “Old School Hockey” and it is the same with “Old School Football”….

Overpower the man in front of you no matter how big he is and how do you go about doing that????

It did not come Upon a Midnight Clear, although that is a very sweet Christmas song….

It came Upon a Summer Time visit after visit to the weight room with rep after rep after rep and then you loaded up the weights and did it all over again…

Next thing you know you have added 40-50 pounds of muscle and you can block anything that moves including a one-horse plow…

Need some work to be ready for the Fall of 2017 and not wanting to be a part of the fall of 2017….

+++++On your blocking routines back in the day if you asked your coach/the coach, “What do I hit?”, his response was very simple and he said and I quote, “HIT ANYTHING THAT MOVES”………*****

  2. And on the by the way, another real quick note, I did recommend Coach Fritz to some Rockingham County people for their vacant coaching position last week…

Hopefully they will give Coach Fritz a look too…

Like to see him back in coaching ASAP…

Again, if you can’t land him as your head coach, bring him in as your line coach…Might seem a bit old school, but he really stresses the fundamentals…

As one of the old coaches used to tell us, “Block inside on all plays unless you are facing the Maryland Wide-Tackle Six”…..

  3. I wish Coach Clay and Coach Fritz the best of luck with future endeavors. I hope that they both land a great coaching job and continue to share their knowledge and love for the game. Good luck to the both of you.
