“The Thorpes End the Year with Team Vengeance”

“The Thorpes End the Year with Team Vengeance”

The Thorpe household loves basketball whether it’s for high school, AAU or college basketball. Their house has 3 basketball players – Todd Thorpe (9th grade Northwest JV), Tiffani Thorpe (11th grade Northwest Varsity) and Tamera Thorpe (2nd year player at The University of South Carolina at Upstate & former GDS star). The Thorpes all ended the year on a high note and with team vengeance.

Wednesday morning Todd’s NW JV team made it the finals of the NW JV Christmas Tournament against Page H.S. This was an extremely physical and exciting game to watch. The game was decided in the final 30 seconds. NW was able to avenge their only loss of the year against a Page team that added even better players from the football team since the previous early season loss. Todd’s team will begin conference play at Ragsdale next Friday.

Wednesday night Tiffani’s NW Varsity team made it the finals of the HAECO Tournament against Northern H.S. This was a match up of two teams that made it to the State Finals in 2016 and the match up that most thought would occur. The game went back and forth the 1st half but NW slowly took control of the game in the 3rd quarter. The 4th quarter was all NW as Tiffani’s team was able to avenge one of their only two losses on the year against Northern. Tiffani brought home the first HAECO Championship to the Thorpe household. Her sister Tamera won the HAECO (TIMCO) 3rd place game all 4 years at GDS. Tiffani’s team will begin conference play at home against Ragsdale next Friday.

Friday night Tamera’s University of South Carolina at Upstate team played host to Maryland Eastern Shore of the MEAC. This was an entertaining game from the beginning to the end. The teams traded leads throughout the first three quarters until Upstate was able to finish the 3rd quarter on a 9-2 run. Upstate took control of the game in the 4th quarter. They were able to avenge one of the few losses from last year’s team that made it to the semifinals of the end year Women’s Basketball Invitation before falling in Utah. Tamera scored a career high of 27 pts while facing former AAU teammates Ciani Byrom and Keyera Eaton from Winston-Salem.

Tamera’s team will finish non-conference play at NC Central University this coming Tuesday 6pm before starting conference play next Saturday.

Hopefully 2017 will start the way that 2016 ended. Good Luck and Good Health to everyone playing in 2017. Happy New Year!
