College Women’s Basketball Final – Guilford 70, Methodist 57

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Guilford College’s Heaven Walters (Elkin, N.C./Starmount) led the Quakers with 22 points as the Quakers claimed a Monday evening victory over Methodist University, 70-57.

Walters, one point shy of tying her career-high point total set last Friday, shot eight-of-ten from the field and six-of-11 shooting from the foul line. She added nine rebounds for her second consecutive nine-rebound effort. Anais Weatherly (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mount Tabor) added 12 points on six-of-eight shooting while securing six rebounds and swiping two steals. Lauren Ramsey (Lexington, N.C./North Davidson) totaled 11 points and seven rebounds while Amy Steller (Advance, N.C./Davie/Pfeiffer) was the remaining Quakers’ (9-1) player in double-figure scoring with ten points while adding six rebounds and three assists.

Methodist (2-9) claimed an early 6-5 lead 3:39 into the opening quarter as the Quakers earned a 10-8 edge with 3:00 left in the period. The Quakers widened their lead at the conclusion of the quarter, amassing a 9-1 run to claim an eight-point lead. The Quakers shot 46.2 percent for the quarter while Methodist shot 26.7 percent in a period where each side committed seven turnovers.

The Monarchs chipped away at the lead, shrinking the Quakers’ advantage to two points 3:07 into the second quarter. The Quakers stormed back with a 12-0 run, holding Methodist scoreless for a 5:28 stretch in the latter portion of the period. Two of the Monarchs’ five field goals came in the final 1:25 of the period in response to the Quakers’ run.

Both sides alternated scoring plays in the first 3:10 of the third quarter as the Quakers achieved their largest lead (14 points) off a Kate Clark three-pointer with 3:50 left in the period. Methodist made nine field goals in the period while the Quakers sunk six baskets.

Methodist held Guilford without points for a 5:31 stretch that carried into the fourth quarter, but the Quakers finished the final 4:12 of the period on a 16-6 run that started as a 7-0 run in the first minute. The Quakers shot six-of-seven from the foul line in the period while the Monarchs did not take a trip to the charity stripe.

Jalisia Campbell led the Monarchs with 20 points and ten rebounds while shooting nine-of-13 from the field. Christian Sanders added 12 points on five-of-14 shooting while securing six rebounds.

The Quakers shot 41 percent for the contest compared to Methodist’s 39.1 percent. Guilford dominated from the foul line, shooting 18-of-25 (72 percent), while Methodist only shot four-of-seven. The Quakers out-rebounded the Monarchs, 42-37, thanks to 16 offensive rebounds to Methodist’s 12. The Quakers held a narrow 36-34 edge in the paint, but held a strong 22-12 advantage on second-chance points.

The Quakers return to Old Dominion Athletic Conference play Wednesday, traveling to Lynchburg College Wednesday for a 7 p.m. contest.
