Pride Men Remain Unbeaten In Conference Play With Victory Over Covenant

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Greensboro College men’s basketball team improved to 3-0 in USA South Athletic Conference play for the first time since 2003-2004 with an 80-67 victory over Covenant College Saturday.
Neither team was able to pull away in the first half until Greensboro (9-4, 3-0 USA South) used a 7-0 run to take a 24-18 lead. Darus Maddox, who finished with a game-high 21 points, started the run with a three-pointer before Donavan Griffith capped it off with a second-chance tip-in.
Covenant (7-8, 1-4 USA South) battled back to take a 37-34 halftime lead after outscoring Greensboro 9-2 over the final four minutes of the half.
After the Scots scored the first bucket of the second half, Greensboro used a 24-8 run over the first nine minutes to establish a 58-47 lead. Joseph Gatling accounted for nine points during the run, while Maddox added six points. Griffith, Lorenzo Marry, Christopher Corbin, and Matteo Baggio combined for nine points.
However, Greensboro was not done adding to its lead.
Following a Z Arima free throw, the Pride ran off 10 straight points to establish their largest lead of the game at 71-50 before the Scots went on a 10-0 run of their own.
Greensboro regrouped after a media timeout before closing out the game on a 9-7 run to secure the win.
“It is tough to play back-to-back college basketball games,” Head Coach Bryan Galuski said. “We were fortunate to come away with a win tonight as we did not perform well from the free-throw line.
“I really hope we can continue this momentum as we now head on a very tough road swing starting next week.”
In addition to Maddox’s game-high 21 points, Gatling (19), Griffith (16), and Corbin (11) also finished in double figures. Griffith also pulled down a team-high eight rebounds, while Hamilton Hawkins and Corbin led the Pride with two assists each.

Pride Women Earn First USA South Victory of the Season

STAUNTON, Va. – The Greensboro College women’s basketball team picked up a USA South Athletic Conference road victory at Mary Baldwin University on Saturday, 72-28.
The Pride (5-8, 1-2 USA South) started slow in the first period against the Fighting Squirrels (2-10, 0-1 USA South). Katie Lewis, Domonique McCoy and Courtney Pearsall recorded a bucket each as the Pride took a 6-2 lead going into the second period.
The Pride came out hot, going on an 11-0 run to take a 17-2 lead with 6:34 remaining in the period. Rasheika Gregory and Kamerin Williams accounted for all 11 points. Gregory scored seven while Williams scored the other four.
The teams traded points for the remainder of the period, with Greensboro taking a 30-13 lead into the break.
The Pride dominated the third period, allowing only one basket to the Fighting Squirrels, while scoring 26 of their own. Gregory would lead the way with eight points, while Katie Lewis added seven points. Kylee Barry, Jonacia Harper, Pearsall, and Williams all contributed to the scoring in the big quarter.
The Pride made another big 12-3 run to start the fourth period, powered by buckets from Williams, Barry, and Gregory. Barry added a three-pointer to the run with 7:19 remaining.
The Fighting Squirrels closed out the game on a 9-4 run of their own, but it was not enough to catch the Pride.
“Today was a good win for us,” Head Coach Randy Tuggle said. “Even though we had another slow start where we could not finish, we were able to start finishing as the game went on to come away with the win.”
Gregory finished with a game-high 18 points, while Williams came close to a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds. Pearsall also had a good day for Greensboro as she finished with eight points, seven rebounds and six steals.

Women’s Swimming Falls To Vixens & Braves

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Greensboro College women’s swimming team fell to UNC-Pembroke and Sweet Briar College Saturday.
UNC-Pembroke defeated the Pride 78-63, while Sweet Briar won 97-53.
Margaret Sutton picked up two wins for Greensboro on the day. Sutton started out the meet with a strong come from behind victory in the 200-yard free style before winning the 500-yard freestyle by over one-minute.
Jurnee Dutremble, who was just out touched in the 50-yard free style, picked up a victory in the 200-yard backstroke by more than 20-seconds.
Kayleigh Hunt and Kelsie Meador also put in some solid swims and helped the team despite competing in some new events.
“We knew going into this meet that it was going to be an uphill battle as we saw some solid competition today,” Head Coach Katie McNerney said. “We had the opportunity to try out a few new events, and our ladies rose to the challenge. They all swam very well, even after our rigorous training in Florida.
“We will get back to practice this week and prepare for our annual Pride Packs the Place event next week.”
