Elon Women’s Tennis Phoenix Sweeps Season-Opening Doubleheader

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University women’s tennis team picked up its first two victories of the spring season on Monday, Jan. 16, defeating North Carolina A&T and Radford 7-0 at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

“We’ve been gearing up for this day for a long time,” Elon head coach Elizabeth Anderson said. “We’ve worked hard this fall with the fall tournaments, but to actually play a dual match is something we’ve been looking forward to. We have a tremendous amount of depth this year and that’s what was nice about today, because everybody got to play.”

Monday’s action marked the first dual match appearances for Phoenix newcomers Alex Koniaev and Sofia Edo. The duo went a combined 6-0 in singles and doubles play.

HIGHLIGHTS
The Phoenix began the day with a victory against North Carolina A&T. Victories on all three doubles courts, highlighted by Koniaev and Erica Braschi’s 6-0 win, gave Elon a 1-0 lead.

Koniaev, Kirsten Ward and Suzanne Zenoni each lost no more than three games in their respective singles matches to clinch the win for Elon. Zenoni’s 6-1, 6-2 triumph on court No. 1 marked the deciding fourth point.

Edo, Maria Paraja and Natalia Janowicz finished off straight-set singles wins to complete the 7-0 sweep of the Aggies (0-1).

A pair of 6-1 victories on court Nos. 2 and 3 clinched the doubles point for Elon against Radford. The pairings of Zenoni/Ward and Braschi/Olivia Lucas, made quick work of their competition.

Zenoni, Paraja and Edo followed with quick singles wins to clinch the match. All three players lost just one game over two sets. Lucas’ 6-2, 6-0 win stretched Elon’s advantage to 5-0.

Koniaev earned a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Karlie Pope and Braschi downed Drousile Dzeubou 6-4, 6-1 to finish the victory over Radford (0-1).

The Phoenix (2-0) returns to action on Friday, Jan. 20, to host South Carolina State. The match is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
