Game Report on Southwest Guilford-Northwest Guilford Boys Basketball:One of the better games you’ll see this season finds SWG Cowboys on the Winning End in the end

The Cowboys hosted the Vikings of Northwest Guilford. This Conference match-up has turned into a heated rivalry for conference supremacy in the last several years. Since the Conference’s inception in the 2009-2010 season, either of these two teams have have either won outright or split the regular season title. This edition of the heavy weight bout also happened to be the TWC game of the week.

These two rivals split in the regular season and the Vikings beat the Cowboys in Overtime in the Conference Tournament Championship game last season. The Cowboys want to reverse that outcome as well as stay unbeaten in Conference play, while the Vikings came into tonight’s tilt after a rough road loss to conference foe High Point Central.

Who would handle the pressure of this big game? Could they manage being televised?

From the tip this was a tough fought war. The teams traded baskets and leads. The opening quarter was back and forth, including 8 lead changes and 2 ties, and ultimately settled with the visiting Vikings up 21-20.

The second quarter opened with a quick 2 points by the Cowboys to regain the lead at 22-21. From there the Vikings took advantage of some sloppy possessions by the Cowboys as Northwest used a 9-0 run to go up 30-22 at the 5:33 mark. Southwest kept chopping away and by the 5:10 mark it was 47-42. Northwest did just enough to keep the Cowboys at arms length, but that arm was getting shorter by the minute. Another little spurt by the Cowboys got them to 49-46 at the 3:45. The Vikings responded with a strong possession extending the lead back to 52-46. After trading baskets to make it 54-48, Southwest’s Kobe Langley calmly hit all 3 free-throws to make it 54-51 with 2:56 to go in the frame. 1. Best part of the game was Reggie Davis’s coast-to-coast slam. Looked like Charles Barkley circa 1988.

  2. Over the last 3 years, I’ve seen many, many Reggie dunks. Especially given the game situation at the time, that might have been the most electrifying of them all.

Kudos to both teams for the great effort last night. Hard fought, sloppy at times, but a great HS basketball game. Can’t wait to see them play again.

  3. Wow, what a great game….both teams played their hearts out! Back and forth, big plays down the stretch. I couldn’t wait to watch the replay on TWC. After a couple quarters it dawned on me. It was a SW home game, but they were using NW commentators, that was a little weird to me. The NW commentators did a pretty good job. Why weren’t SW commentators used if it was their home game. Does SW not have their own commentators and that’s why NW commentators were used. How awesome is it that NW has their own commentators, HD sports have com a long way. Just a thought!

  4. NW had their own refs too. #50 traveled at least 3 times. The night was a bit strange for me. SW announcer acknowledged a NW player for a scoring accomplishment. Game paused and NW seemed to get a bit fired up about it and went on a run. SW gym felt like a NW home game. Made NW players and fans feel too comfortable. Strange…

  5. BB Fan, I agree. One would think that the media were NW grads. Weird. NW and GDS are the clear favorites in the county.

  6. I think Southwest Guilford was trying to do a good job making things look good and sound good for TV and feel like SWG did a very good representing both schools and it was a good day for Guilford County Schools, on TV…

  7. Also, please note that Coach Shavers and Coach Reavis have a close relationship that goes back several years. I’m sure that played a part in the sportsmanship shown by the good folks at SW. Kudos to them. These commenters, on the other hand, smh………
