Elon Men’s Tennis Splits Doubleheader Against Monmouth, NC State

RALEIGH, N.C. – Elon University men’s tennis split its only doubleheader of the season on Sunday, Jan. 22, in taking a 4-1 win over Monmouth before falling 7-0 to NC State at J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.

The Monmouth Rundown
Elon opened the afternoon with a strong start at No. 2 doubles from Petar Tomic and Chris Humphreys, who took a quick 6-0 win to get the Phoenix halfway to the doubles point. But Monmouth responded by taking both Nos. 1 and 3 to win the point.

In singles, Mario Paccini and Salvador Mijares both made quick work of their opponents to give Elon the 2-1 lead. Paccini topped Przemyslaw Filipek 6-0, 6-4 and Mijares defeated Ale Gomez Estrada 6-1, 6-4. Tomic and Felipe Sarrasague then finished off the win as Tomic won 7-6 (1), 6-3 and Sarrasague came from behind to beat Nicola Pipoli 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.

With four courts at Isenhour Tennis Center, Nos. 5 and 6 singles did not start until after two of the first four singles matches completed. At No. 5, Felipe Osses-Konig led Christian Vieira 3-2 and at No. 6, Neal Port led Vikrant Dahiya 3-1 before the match was called.

The NC State Rundown
NC State took the doubles point with a 6-2 victory at No. 2 for Nick Horton and Alexis Galarneau over Humphreys and Tomic. The Wolfpack finished the doubles points with Igor Saveljic and Ivan Saveljic topping Paccini and Sarrasague 6-1. At No. 3, Port and Mijares were all square at 3-3 with Georgiy Malyshev and Michael Ogden before the match was abandoned with the Wolfpack taking the point.

In singles, Galarneau – ranked No. 103 in the nation – made it 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-1 over Paccini at No. 2 and Igor Saveljic topped Mijares 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3. To clinch the win, Horton – ranked No. 37 in the country – topped Sarrasague 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1 to make it 3-0 Wolfpack.

NC State then clinched the match with a 6-7 (5), 6-3, 1-0 (8) win by Malyshev at No. 4 singles over Tomic. Finishing out the final two courts on Nos. 5 and 6 Port fell 6-4, 6-0 to Sean Burnette and Osses-Konig dropped a 6-0, 6-7 (7), 1-0 (8) decision to Ogden after forcing a third set.
