College Women’s Basketball Final – Guilford 74, Emory & Henry 45

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College’s Anais Weatherly (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mount Tabor) notched her eighth double-double of the season as the Quakers claimed a Wednesday evening Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory over Emory & Henry College, 74-45.

The Wasps (12-6, 6-3 ODAC) held a 10-7 advantage 3:33 into the first quarter before the Quakers (15-2, 8-1 ODAC) slowly chipped away at the advantage and posted an 11-5 run throughout the rest of the quarter to claim a three-point lead after one period. The Quakers held the Wasps to just two field goals in the final 6:27 of the frame.

Emory & Henry opened the first 1:18 of the second quarter on a 5-0 run before a Miracle Walters (Elkin, N.C./Elkin) lay-up broke the run and tied the game, 20-20 with 8:22 left in the period. Both sides went without a field goal for the next 4:27 before both sides produced a spurt of four baskets in 1:24 as the Quakers’ lead grew as large as seven entering halftime.

Guilford extended their lead to 11 points with 6:14 left in the third quarter and hit the mark again with 5:07 left in the period, mounting a 10-0 run for a 4:54 stretch in the latter portion of the period to pull the lead farther away. The Quakers broke open a narrow points-in-the-paint deficit by out-scoring the Wasps in the paint 12-4, for the quarter. The Quakers shot 50 percent for the period while holding Emory & Henry to just three field goals, shooting 15.8 percent.

The Quakers’ lead grew to 26 points with 6:43 left in the fourth quarter, with the lead ballooning as large as 32 with 2:57 left in the contest. The Quakers claimed the edge in the paint for the period, 14-6, and slight advantage in points-off-turnovers, 9-6, as Guilford cruised to victory.

Weatherly was one of three Quakers’ players to score 13 points as she shot six-of-12 from the field while pulling down 13 rebounds, dishing six assists, and swiping five steals. Heaven Walters’ (Elkin, N.C./Starmount) 13 points came on five-of-ten shooting while adding four assists. Lauren Ramsey (Lexington, N.C./North Davidson) posted 13 points on five-of-seven shooting while adding four assists with two blocks. Kate Clark was the remaining Quakers’ player in double-figure scoring, notching 11 points on four-of-eight shooting, three-of-six from three-point range.

Asja Jenkins led the Wasps with ten points on five-of-ten shooting as the lone Emory & Henry player in double-figure scoring.

The Quakers shot 44.6 percent for the contest, including 50 percent in the second half where Guilford shot nine-of-18 in each quarter. Emory & Henry shot 29.5 percent for the contest, sinking only eight second-half field goals while shooting 25 percent.

The Quakers tallied 23 assists to Emory & Henry’s ten, 15 of Guilford’s helpers coming in the second half. The Quakers won the battle in the paint, 38-24, and claimed a 25-13 edge in points-off-turnovers. The Quakers out-rebounded the Wasps, 48-34, while winning the battle for second-chance points, 11-5.

The Quakers travel to Eastern Mennonite University Saturday for a 1 p.m. ODAC contest.
