ELON, N.C. – Elon University sophomores Steven Santa Ana and Tyler Seibring have been named to the Capital One Academic All-District 3 Men’s Basketball Team, as announced Thursday morning, Feb. 9, by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

CoSIDA Academic All-District Teams

Santa Ana and Seibring mark the first Phoenix to make the All-District team since Drew Spradlin in 2011, who was eventually named an Academic All-American. Elon was the only Division I program to place two on the All-District teams this year as a total of 42 student-athletes were selected. It’s just the second time in program history the program has had multiple players honored in the same season. Last time Elon had multiple selections was in 1988 when Brian Branson, Tony Chavis and Steve Page earned Academic All-District and All-America honors.

By virtue of being named to the first team, Santa Ana and Seibring will be included on the national ballot for the Capital One Academic All-America Team. In addition to Santa Ana and Seibring, Luke Kornet (Vanderbilt), Evan Bradds (Belmont) and Kevin Vannatta (UNC Asheville) were also selected to the All-District 3 team.

A native of Charlotte, N.C., Santa Ana maintains a 3.73 GPA as a Finance and Management double major. He has been selected to the Dean’s List at Elon every semester thus far.

On the court, Santa Ana has scored in double figures 15 times while ranking third on the team in scoring at 12.1 points to go along with 3.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game. He is third in the CAA in three-pointers made (56) and is averaging 11.8 points per game in conference games. Santa Ana scored a career and season-high 32 points in a narrow defeat against Charlotte on Nov. 14. He also tied a school record with nine three-pointers in a tight loss at William & Mary on Jan. 5.

Seibring was named a 2016 Preseason All-CAA selection and earned a spot on the 2016 CAA All-Rookie team as a freshman. This season, he has twice been named the CAA Player of the Week on Jan. 23 and Jan. 30. He maintains a 4.00 GPA as an English and Economics double major. Seibring has been a member of the President’s List every semester.

The Normal, Ill., native has had a solid sophomore season in maroon and gold. He is averaging a team-high 13.8 points and betters that to 15.4 points against CAA opponents. He also leads the team in rebounding (6.6 rpg), has scored in double figures 17 times and has led the team in scoring in a team-high nine games this season. Seibring has scored 20 or more points in four games already this year and is shooting above 40 percent from the field.

To be eligible for nomination, student-athletes must have participated in at least 50 percent of their team’s games, be of sophomore standing athletically and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.3.

The Academic All-District™ teams are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. This is the sixth year of the expanded Academic All-America® program as CoSIDA moved from recognizing a University Division (Division I) and a College Division (all non-Division I) and has doubled the number of scholar-athletes honored. The expanded teams include NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants, while the College Division Academic All-America® Team combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools. The Division II and III Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II and III national governance structures, to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2016-17 DII and DIII Academic All-America® teams program.
