4A Indoor Track & Field Championship Recap: High Point Central women and Panther Creek men secure championships

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The High Point Central women got two individual wins from Tamara Clark and a relay win to help earn the school’s first women’s Indoor Track & Field Championship. Meanwhile Panther Creek held off West Forsyth and Green Hope thanks to a record setting day for J Johnson, earning the Catamounts’ first team Indoor Track and Field title.

Clark was named the women’s meet’s M.V.P. as she set a state record in the 300-meter Dash, completing the distance in :37.81 seconds, breaking the record of :38.76 seconds set in 2013 by Tyra Lea from Wakefiled. She also led off the state-record setting and victorious 4 X 400 Relay team, combining with Monzerad Creary, TiCoiya Gidderon and Zhamoura McPhail to post a time of 3:48.73, breaking the old record set by Wakefield in 2012 by just over three seconds.

Clark also won the 55-meter dash in :06.89 seconds, just two-hundredths of a second off of the state record in the event held by Gabby Mayo. She also teamed with Leah Bolden, McPhail and Lauren Williams to win the 4 X 200 Relay in a time of 1:40.76.

Johnson was the men’s meet M.V.P. as he set a new state record of :34.39 seconds in the 300-meter Dash, lowering the record set by Fuqwuan Greene of New Bern in 2009 by a tenth of a second. Johnson also won the 55-meter Dash in :06.33 seconds and was top in the Long Jump clearing 22’ 8.5”.

On the women’s side, High Point Central outpaced defending 4A Champion Southeast Raleigh on the day by an 80-61 count. Central got a second place showing from Kayla Nesbitt-McEwen in the Triple Jump as she crossed 36’ 7” on her best attempt, finishing just behind Michelle Cobb from T.C. Roberson who won the event with a distance of 37’ 9.50”. Nesbitt-McEwen also finished second in the High Jump clearing 5’ 4” while Rocky River’s Kenya Livingston took first clearing 5’ 9”.

Creary (1:15.23) and Gidderon (1:16.80) finished third and fourth respectively for High Point Central in the 500-meter Dash, just behind Maya Singletary of Hoke County who won the event in a time of 1:13.47. Kyna Robinson from Southeast Raleigh finished second in the race crossing the line in 1:14.79.

Sara Platek from Ragsdale won the 3200-meter Run and set a state record in the event for the second year in a row. Platek completed the distance in 10:31.57 shaving 37-hundredths of a second off her record-setting time a year ago.

The Men’s competition was much closer, with Panther Creek edging West Forsyth 40-31. In addition to the performances by meet M.V.P. Johnson, the Catamounts got a third place finish from Justin Smalls in the High Jump as he cleared 6’ 4” on his second attempt at the height. He finished behind Seth Clyburn from West Forsyth who won the event at 6’ 4”, clearing on his first attempt, and Randolph Ross of Garner was second.

The state record in the 4 X 200 Relay on the men’s side was broken for the second day in a row as the Parkland quartet of Savien Hayes, Trequan Barnes, Joseph Littlejohn and Justen Burnette posted a time of 1:30.18, eclipsing the time of 1:30.35 set by the 1A/2A Champion North Brunswick yesterday.

  1. Not a bad day for the Pirates.
    Ian Shanklin was 2nd in the 1600 in 4:22 and 3rd in the 1000 in 2:32.
    The Page 4×400 relay placed 8th and scored.
    Garrett Willett, Asaad Alston, Dontavius Monroe & Trey Cousar ran 3:32.28 which is their season’s personal best.
