Virginia Tech Challenge
BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Elon University women’s track and field team saw three more individual athletes clinch their tickets to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Indoor Championships as the Phoenix concluded its day at the Virginia Tech Challenge on Saturday, Feb. 18, inside the Rector Field House.
Carrie Abraham won the women’s triple jump with her season-best leap of 39’ 5” (12.01m). Fellow senior Jayna Coyle set a new personal-record with her mark of 38’ 10.5” (11.85m), which qualified her for the ECAC Championships.
In the women’s one-mile, freshman Melissa Anastasakis and junior Brigid Brennan reached the ECACs after the pair finished fourth and fifth in the race, respectively. Anastasakis raced a time of 4:58.59 while Brennan clocked a time of 4:58.96. Sophia Tasselmyer won the 3,000-meters with her time of 10:07.79.
Elon’s 4×400-meter relay team of Desiree Ross, Katie Arbogast, Lydia Laws and Lauren Brzozowski finished as the runner-up in the race with the second-fastest indoor time in school history. The quartet raced a 3:48.36 and finished only behind James Madison in the event.
Meagan Henderson was Elon’s top finisher in the 400-meters with her time of 59.26 and finished seventh overall. Junior Corey Weiss broke into the program’s top-five list in the 1,000-meters after she ran a time of 3:04.19 in the race to finish sixth.
UCS Challenge
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Kimberly Johansen set another school-record in the one-mile run while senior Briana O’Grady’s new personal-record in the weight throw highlighted the Phoenix’s performance at the UCS Challenge at the JDL Fast Track.
Johansen broke her own school-record once again in the one-mile as the Chelmsford, England, native ran a time of 4:42.77 to finish fifth in the race against some of the best athletes in the region.
In the weight throw, O’Grady punched a ticket to the ECACs for the first time as the South Kingstown, R.I., native threw the second-best mark in school history in the weight throw. O’Grady threw a 53’ 3.75” (16.25m) and became only the second athlete in school history to have a throw of 16-meters or more in the event as she finished fifth overall.
Bre’anna Warren was second overall in the shot put and first among collegiate athletes. The Greensboro, N.C., native had a mark of 47’ 7.25” (14.51m) in the event while teammate Bryanna Hames also finished in the top-five with her heave of 45’ 3” (13.79m).
Shelby Cuddeback was fifth in the 3,000-meters at 10:00.07 while Coralea Geraniotis was sixth at her time of 10:00.35.
Emily Smith was Elon’s top finisher in the 800-meters with her time of 2:25.90 while Paige King was next at 2:26.22. Alicia DeCastro was not far behind at 2:26.81.
