Barrett, Homers Lift Elon Baseball Past Radford

ELON, N.C. – A dominant starting outing by Jordan Barrettand a quartet of home runs lifted the Elon University baseball team to a 10-1 victory over the visiting Radford Highlanders at Latham Park on Tuesday afternoon.

Barrett (1-0) struck out a career-high 13 hitters in 7.0 innings and carried a no-hitter in to the sixth inning. He allowed just one run on two hits and walked one in the victory.

The Elon (3-1) offense was led by Ryne Ogren who matched a personal best with five RBI. Ogren went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run.

Radford (1-3) saw starter Andrew Nardi (0-1) took the loss after surrendering three runs on two hits. Nardi struck out nine.

Luke Wise went 1-for-3 with a solo home run for the Highlanders.

How It Happened: The two sides were locked in a pitcher’s duel early in the game as Elon’s Cam Devanneyhad the lone hit of the first four innings. With two outs in the bottom of the third, Devanney turned on a 2-0 pitch and belted the first home run of his career over the wall in left.

Barrett’s perfect game was broken up when the first Radford batter of the fifth reached on an error, but he then retired the next three hitters to keep Elon up 1-0.

The Phoenix bats woke up in the last of the fifth. With one out, Garrett Stonehouse doubled to right, went to third on a wild pitch and then scored on an errant throw to third by the Radford catcher to give Elon a 2-0 lead. Liam O’Regan walked and moved to second on a wild pitch before a two-out walk to Zach Evers was followed by an RBI double off the bat of CJ Young. Ogren then doubled home both runners as the Phoenix built a 5-0 advantage.

With one out in the sixth, Barrett saw his no-hitter broken up when Wise drove a pitch to right-center for a home run.

Elon got that run right back in its half of the frame when Shawn Blake led off with a homer.

The Phoenix would score three more in the seventh on Ogren’s blast and a final tally when Kory Shumatebelted a homer in the eighth.

Notes: All seven of Elon’s hits were of the extra base variety (three doubles and four home runs)… Three Phoenix pitchers combined to strike out 16 Radford hitters… Through four games, Elon has out-scored its opponents by a 32-15 margin.
