College Softball Finals – Guilford 3–8, William Peace 5–0 (Game 2 in 5 inn.)

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College’s Danielle Hunt (Denton, N.C./South Davidson) threw a complete-game two hitter in game two of Wednesday afternoon’s doubleheader split with William Peace University. The Pacers took game one, 5-2, while the Quakers took the nightcap, 8-0, in five innings.

Hunt record nine consecutive outs to open the second contest as she fanned one through the first three innings. Guilford’s bats provided run support for Hunt in the bottom of the second inning as Savannah Yale capped a three-run rally, all coming with two outs, with a two-run double to left field.

Guilford mounted another three-run rally one-inning as the Quakers posted five hits in the frame. Makayla Crawford started the rally with a one-out single while Taylor Boyd followed with a RBI-double. Katy Holt claimed a multiple-RBI day with a single as lead grew to six. After one out in the bottom of the fifth frame, Yale connected on a walk-off solo home run to end the game as the Quakers’ lead reached eight runs.

Shelby Helms led off the the Guilford rally in game one with a lead-off home run to right field to open the bottom of the second inning as the Quakers faced the minimum for the first three innings.

William Peace mounted a three-run rally with no outs in the top of the fourth frame in a rally capped by a Heather McLean three-run home run to left field to claim the lead. The Pacers’ top-half of the order came through again in the top of the sixth inning as Wiggins connected on another home run to left field to extend the lead to three.

Katy Holt sparked an attempted comeback bid in the bottom of the seventh inning with a lead-off solo home run, her third home run of the season, but the Pacers stopped the rally.

Holt finished the day four-for-five with three RBI and a double over the doubleheader to lead the Quakers. Carver posted a three-for-seven effort with a double and two RBI. Yale posted a double to add to her home run in her two-for-two effort, one of three Quakers to post a multi-hit effort in game two.

Lackey (4-1) took the game one complete-game loss striking out six and walking two. Hunt (2-0) struck out one in the two-hit effort in game two.

The Quakers continue their homestand Saturday, hosting Southern Virginia University for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
