College Men’s Lacrosse Final – Guilford 15, Greensboro 8

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Zach Berkowitz and Aswan Bland both scored three goals in Guilford College’s 15-8 lacrosse win over visiting Greensboro College Wednesday. Berkowitz added two assists for five points in the Quakers’ (1-1) sixth straight victory over the Pride (1-1).

Guilford scored the game’s first seven goals and outshot the Pride, 18-0, in the opening quarter. Berkowitz tallied twice in the opening frame, once with a man advantage. Connor Sweeney and Derek Spaulding capped the dominant quarter with consecutive scores nine seconds apart at the 1:17 mark.

Greensboro awoke with vengeance in the second quarter. Davis Miller scored three of his game-high four goals during a 5-0 Pride run. Greensboro scored four times within a 90-second span to get back within 7-4. Miller’s third tally of the quarter came with a man advantage and drew the Pride to within 7-5. Bland’s second goal of the game stopped the run and gave Guilford an 8-5 halftime lead.

The Quakers regrouped at halftime as Berkowitz scored his third tally 1:35 into the third quarter, which sparked a 4-1 Guilford run that put the game out of reach. Freshman Zack Capwell and sophomore Aaron Parrish scored the first two goals of their college careers in the second half. The Quakers outscored Greensboro, 7-3 in the final two quarters.

Berkowitz’s five points paced Guilford’s offense. He also picked up five ground balls. Nine different Quakers found the back of the net, including Spaulding, who also had two assists. Alex Ramey also scored, in addition to winning 10-of-16 face-offs. David Felipe picked up a club-high seven ground balls and fellow long-stickman Will Forrestal caused a career- and game high seven turnovers, one shy of the school standard. The seven caused turnovers are the most by a Quakers since 2011. Felipe and Forrestal helped support goalie Parker Styles, who made five saves.

Miller’s five points led Greensboro, which was outshot, 46-22. Jonathan Avedesian and Daniel Wolf both added two goals and one assist. Phillip Gerber had a game-high eight ground balls and goalie Chris Di Blasi made 15 saves.
