Northeastern Outlasts Elon MBB 105-104 in Double Overtime

ELON, N.C. – Tyler Seibring hit a game-tying jumper at the end of regulation to force overtime and scored 30 points to lead Elon, but Northeastern escaped Alumni Gym with a 105-104 victory in double overtime on Thursday night.

Five Phoenix players scored in double figures. Dmitri Thompson had 23 points and 10 rebounds, while Steven Santa Ana pitched in 18 points. Brian Dawkins and Dainan Swoope each finished with 11 points.

“Great game. You won’t find a better, more exciting college basketball game anywhere in the country,” Elon head coach Matt Matheny said. “For some of the plays these guys made to get us back in the game to put it in overtime, to put it in the second overtime, incredible. Just a great college basketball game that didn’t finish the way we wanted it to.”

The Highlights
Luke Eddy hit a pair of free throws with 19 seconds left in the game to give Elon a 104-103 lead. The Huskies’ T.J. Williams was fouled with seven seconds remaining and made two free throws to give Northeastern a one-point lead.

The Phoenix inbounded the ball on its own baseline with two seconds to play and got the ball to Seibring, who missed a game-winning attempt at the buzzer.

Elon trailed 81-76 with 1:46 to play in regulation before Seibring’s 3-pointer cut the deficit to two with 1:03 left. The Phoenix called timeout trailing by two with three seconds to play before Seibring’s buzzer-beating shot tied the game at 81 and sent the contest to overtime.

The Phoenix got off to a strong shooting start, taking a 14-3 lead less than five minutes in on a 3-pointer by Santa Ana. The Phoenix shot 51.5 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes and led 45-43 at halftime.

For the game, the Phoenix shot 43.2 percent from the field and made 14 of 34 attempts from deep, good for a 41.2 percent mark. Northeastern shot 50 percent from the field and finished with 16 3-pointers.

Northeastern’s Bolden Brace scored a game-high 40 points, 28 of which came in the first half. T.J. Williams achieved a triple-double of 26 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds.

– Tyler Seibring scored a career-high 30 points, his first 30+-point game of his career. He is the 11thPhoenix player to score 30 points in a game in Elon’s Division I era.
– Seibring recorded his first double double of the season with 30 points and 12 rebounds. It is the third of his career.
– Dmitri Thompson recorded his first-career double-double, finishing with career highs in points (23) and rebounds (10).
– Elon played its first double-overtime conference game since defeating College of Charleston 99-98 on Feb. 2, 2012.
– The game was Elon’s second double-overtime contest of the season. The Phoenix defeated Northern Illinois 85-80 on Nov. 25, 2016.
– Luke Eddy finished with six assists, moving him into the top 10 in program history. Eddy now has 290 assists in his career, which is tied with Jack Isenbarger for ninth-most all time. Eddy needs seven more assists to move past Ross Sims (296 assists) for eighth place.
– Steven Santa Ana finished with five 3-pointers to move to 66 total 3-pointers made this season, which is 10th-most in program history for a single season.
