Elon Track and Field to Compete at Raleigh Relays

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University women’s track and field team will compete this Friday and Saturday, March 24-25, at the prestigious Raleigh Relays held at the campus of NC State. The meet is scheduled to begin on Friday at 9:45 a.m. and on Saturday at 8 a.m.

Elon Preliminaries
• The Phoenix takes its annual visit to the Raleigh Relays, one of the biggest track meets on the East Coast. Approximately 2,500 individual and relay entries from 100 NCAA programs, as well as professional athletes and high school competitors will be in competition this weekend.
• Elon opened its 2017 outdoor campaign last week at the Bob Davidson Spring Kickoff on the campus of High Point University. The maroon and gold saw a few of its athletes set personal-best in a few events as well as earn medalist honors.
• Among last week’s standouts included junior Bryanna Hames, the reigning Co-Colonial Athletic Association Field Athlete of the Week as named on Tuesday, March 21. Hames broke her own school-record in the outdoor shot put with her toss of 47′ 6.5″ (14.49m) and was the runner-up overall. She later won the discus throw at the meet with her toss of 158′ 0″ (48.15m).
• Hames own the CAA best mark in both the shot put and the discus throw in the early-season rankings. Chelsea Smith (800-meters), Carrie Abraham (triple jump) and Corey Weiss (3,000-meter steeplechase) also have the current best times or marks in the league in their respective events.

Last Time Out
The Phoenix began the 2017 outdoor season at the Bob Davidson Spring Kickoff at Vert Stadium on the campus of High Point University last Friday and Saturday, March 17-18. Weiss set a new personal-best in the 3,000-meter steeplechase as she clocked a time of 11:07.15 as the runner-up. Sophomore Lauren Brzozowski also set a new personal-best in the 100-meter dash with her time of 12.31 in the preliminary round while Jayna Coyle emerged as Elon’s top finisher in the long jump at a mark of 5.26m.

Bre’anna Warren was third overall in the discus throw with her mark of 154’ 9” (47.16m), a new personal-best. Abraham was second in the triple jump with a leap of 11.77m while Coyle was also in the top-six of the triple jump with her mark of 11.51m. Lydia Laws garnered a third-place standing in the 400-meter hurdles with her time of 1:01.52.

Smith finished third overall in the 800-meters with a time of 2:16.11 for the Phoenix. In the pole vault, Ellie Bennett was the runner-up with a cleared height of 3.35m. Teammate Nicole Karabas also cleared the bar at 3.35m, but finished fourth as she needed more attempts to do so.
