GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Greensboro College baseball team topped Averett University in the first game of a three-game USA South Conference series Friday, 3-2.

After neither team was able to record a hit over the first 3 innings, Greensboro scored its first run in the fourth inning when Jimmy Short plated Zach Neumeister from second base with a one out double down the left field line.

Greensboro then added to their lead with two runs in the fifth inning.

Brandon Soden recorded a one out single to center field before advancing into scoring position on a perfectly executed sacrifice but by Brady Dignan.

Following the sacrifice bunt, Neumeister laced a single through the right side to score Soden before coming around to score himself on a wild pitch later in the inning.

With the Pride clinging to a three-run advantage in the ninth inning, Averett plated two runs but Willis Booth was able to end the game strikeout to pick up his first save of the season.

“I am happy we got the win today,” Head Coach Frank Maldonado said. “Even though we got the win, we have to play with more energy as we make a push to the conference tournament.

Soden paced the Pride at the plate with a two hit performance, while Daniel Efrid, Neumeister, Short, and Edward Milian had one hit each. Piero Amador picked up his fourth win of the season after striking out four batters over seven innings.

The Pride will return to action at 2 p.m. Saturday where they will honor their seniors prior to the start of the second game of the doubleheader with the Cougars of Averett. For more information on Greensboro College baseball, continue to follow www.greensborocollegesports.com.
