Students From Apex & Panther Creek Earn Performance Of The Week Awards

CHAPEL HILL — Tess Meurling from Apex High School and J Johnson from Panther Creek High School have been named recipients of the NCHSAA Performance of the Week awards, powered by Spectrum SportsChannel.

Each week two athletes in North Carolina High School Athletic Association competition are selected for this award from nominations received from media and school administrators.

Meurling, a junior on the Cougars women’s lacrosse team, scored a goal in the final minute of the game to ice an Apex victory over previously unbeaten Middle Creek and keep the Cougars record on the season spotless. She had seven total goals in the game, including her 100th career goal, adding an assist, five draw controls and four ground balls. She also scored five goals in a win against Athens Drive. Meurling is committed to Old Dominion to continue her career and is in the top three in the state for goals, points, ground balls and draw wins.

Johnson, a senior on the Panther Creek track team, was superb at the Wake County track meet last week. Johnson won the 100 & 200 Meter Dash events and the Long Jump. He ran a time of :10.34 seconds in the 100, which is currently the top time in the State and tied for fifth in the nation. His long jump of 24’ 3.75” also ranks as the top mark in the state this season and fifth in the country as well. Earlier this year, Johnson was named the M.V.P. of the Indoor Track & Field 4A State Championships where he helped Panther Creek claim their first team State Championship.

Spectrum SportsChannel typically announces the winners of the awards during its Sports Night show and will recognize the winners throughout the week. Weekly recipients will also be recognized via Twitter and Facebook. The deadline for nominations is each Monday at 5 p.m through the online form that can be found here.
