College Women’s Lacrosse Final – Roanoke 13, Guilford 5

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Morgan Barlow and Courtney McCartin both scored twice during a decisive second-half run that propelled visiting Roanoke College to a 13-5 women’s lacrosse win at Guilford College. The Maroons (4-9, 4-1 ODAC) outscored the Quakers (6-7, 3-2 ODAC), 8-2, in the second half for their fourth straight victory.

Hannah Taylor scored twice in a 4-1 Roanoke run to start the game, which staked the visitors to a 5-3 halftime lead. The Quakers’ Demming Carlow and Madison Iandoli scored around a Katie Clements goal to close out the first half.

McCartin opened the second-half scoring at the 23:19 mark, which started a five-goal outburst over the next 2:49. Allison Beames scored a free-position with 20:49 to play and Barlow finished the spurt 19 seconds later open an insurmountable 10-3 lead.

Guilford’s Iandoli and Fowler scored back-to-back goals midway through the second half to get the Quakers back to within 10-5 with 15 minutes left, but Roanoke’s Jenn Schwechheimer followed with consecutive tallies and Katerina DeSimone closed the scoring with 3:14 to play.

McCartin, Schwechheimer, Taylor, Beames and Barlow each scored two goals for Roanoke. McCartin added an assist for a team-best three points. Clements had a goal and an assist, plus seven draw controls, which helped Roanoke to a 13-7 edge in the category. The Maroons won the game’s first eight draws, five by Clements. DeSimone and Brooke Thacker both caused two turnovers and picked up five ground balls. Emma Blair kept Guilford from gaining momentum on offense with seven saves, four in the second half. Roanoke outshot Guilford, 36-18.

Fowler and Iandoli paced the Quakers’ offense with two goals apiece. Fowler, who also had an assist, shared game-high honors for points (3) and ground balls (5). Sammi Milbourn made 15 saves, caused a turnover and picked up four ground balls.

Coach Sarah Lamphier’s Quakers host Bridgewater College Saturday (4/15) at 4:00 p.m. in an ODAC game.
