Asher Sets Elon WLAX Program’s Scoring Record in 15-2 Win Over Drexel

ELON, N.C. – Stephanie Asher scored four goals to lead Elon University women’s lacrosse to a dominant 15-2 victory over Drexel on Friday night, April 14, at Rudd Field. The 13-goal win over the Dragons marks the largest conference win to date for the Phoenix and the two goals allowed is the fewest in a game in program history.

FINAL STATS

Elon’s win moves the Phoenix to 9-5 on the season and 1-2 in CAA play. It also snaps the Phoenix’s three-game losing streak. Drexel falls to 6-6 on the year with a 1-1 record in CAA action. The Phoenix shut the Dragons down in the second half, holding Drexel scoreless in the frame and going the final 26:52 of the game without giving up a goal.

Asher led Elon with her four goals. She also notched an assist with two ground balls, two caused turnovers and a draw control. Abby Godfrey and Kelsey Dupere each scored three goals and Dupere added two draw controls and a ground ball. Shannon Horan scored twice and Nicole Sinacori rounded out the scoring with one tally. Alexis Zadjura paced the Phoenix with four ground balls to go with two draw controls. Sloane Kessler added three assists in the win to tie with her 2015 mark with 21 assists. That figure is good for second in program history.

Nadia Pelham-Lacey and Devin Nihill scored Drexel’s only two goals of the game. Pelham-Lacey’s goal tied the contest at 1-1 and Nihill’s tally made it a three-goal game late in the first half.

The Rundown
Outshooting Drexel 30-17, Elon got off and running with Dupere’s first goal nearly seven minute into the game. After Drexel tied things up 9:30 into the evening, the Phoenix went on a 4-0 run on goals from Godfrey, Asher, Dupere and Cooper before Nihill ended the run with 6:53 to go.

To close the first half, Elon went on another 4-0 run with Asher, Horan, Godfrey and Sinacori finding the net to go into halftime leading 9-2. The nine goals fell one short of the most in a half on the season. Elon scored 10 in the first half against Coastal Carolina.

In the second half, the Phoenix defense put on a stellar display in allowing Drexel 10 shots without giving up a goal. Rachel Ramirez made 10 saves on the day, notching her sixth double-digit save game of the year and first since the Phoenix topped Coastal Carolina back on March 24.

Asher’s record-breaking goal was the final goal of the game with 3:06 to go. She fired her shot, the 125th goal of her career, top shelf to beat the goalie.

In only allowing two goals, the Dragons’ total marks the fewest Elon has allowed in a game in program history. The previous record came last season when the Phoenix topped Holy Cross by the score of 14-3. Now at 9-5 on the year, Elon is one win away from tying last year’s program record for most victories in a single season.
