College Baseball Finals – Guilford 11–4, Washington and Lee 5–13

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College’s Mitchell Stumpo tallied six total RBI over Saturday afternoon’s Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader split with Washington and Lee University. The Quakers claimed game one, 11-5, while Washington and Lee took the nightcap, 13-4.

The Quakers (18-16, 5-10 ODAC) jumped on the Generals in the second inning of game one as Stumpo collected two RBI on a double to left field with two out. The Quakers collected three-straight RBI hits with two outs, posting four runs in that portion of the rally as Guilford extended their life in the frame.

The Generals (21-9, 12-2 ODAC) broke up a Guilford no-hitter with one out in the top of the fourth frame in a three-run rally buoyed by Anderson Baldy double down the right field line that brought home two runs.

Stumpo collected his fourth RBI one half-inning later after a Rocco Wilcox single placed runners at the corners with one out. Stumpo connected on triple to right-center field, clearing the bases and propelling Guilford’s lead back to four. Stumpo sparked a two-run rally in the bottom of the sixth inning after Wilcox moved runners into scoring position with a successful sacrifice bunt in front of home plate. Stumpo beat out a ground ball to second base to drive in the first of two runs. Trevor Denton connected on the Quakers’ third single of the inning to cap the rally on a hit through the left side. Wilcox posted an exclamation point on Guilford’s two-run rally in the seventh frame with a single up the middle. Guilford only allowed two walks in the final two innings as the Quakers held on to victory.

Stumpo and Denton continued their dominance at the plate to start game two as both produced a two-run rally in the first inning in response to Washington and Lee’s two-run rally to start the game. As the Quakers opened with two-straight singles, Stumpo grounded out to drive home Josh Shepherd at third base. Denton connected on a sacrifice fly to right field, driving home Wilcox.

The Generals scored seven runs in the middle innings, including a three-run rally in the fifth inning, sparked by a Cory Paton two-RBI single to a hole at the first-base with runners in motion. A Kyle Ruedisili triple to right-center field sparked a four-run rally in the eighth inning.

The Quakers put up two late-out, one-run rallies in an effort to stay in the game. Andrew Brann doubled with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning after two-straight outs to open the frame.

Stumpo finished five-for-ten on his six-RBI afternoon with a double and a triple, accounting for both of Guilford’s extra-base hits in game one. Denton also finished five-for-ten with three RBI, including a four-for-five effort in game one. Wilcox also tallied five hits and produced a four-for-four effort in game one while totaling two RBI.
