Elon: Pairings Set for 2017 CAA Tennis Championships

ELON, N.C. – The pairings are set for the 2017 CAA Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships, which will be held April 20-23 at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center on the campus of the Elon University. This is the second consecutive season that Elon is hosting the CAA Tennis Championships.

The Phoenix has been tabbed as the No. 2 seed in both the women’s and men’s championships. The women’s squad finished the regular season with a 17-7 record overall and a 13-1 mark at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. The men’s completed the season with an 11-11 overall mark, a 7-4 record at home, and are riding a three-match winning streak entering the tournament.

The women’s championship starts on Thursday morning with first-round action as No. 8 Drexel faces No. 9 Hofstra at 10 a.m. Quarterfinal play gets underway at 9 a.m. on Friday with top-seeded William & Mary meeting the Drexel/Hofstra winner and No. 4 James Madison squaring off with No. 5 Delaware. Those matches will be followed at 1 p.m. by No. 2 Elon taking on No. 7 Towson and No. 3 College of Charleston battling with No. 6 UNCW.

The winners advance to Saturday’s 10 a.m. semifinal contests and the CAA women’s championship match is set for 10 a.m. on Sunday.

The men’s championship starts on Friday morning with four quarterfinal matches at the Burlington Tennis Center in Burlington, N.C. Starting at 9 a.m., top-seeded UNCW takes on No. 8 Delaware and No. 4 College of Charleston goes against No. 5 James Madison. Beginning at 1 p.m., No. 2 Elon meets No. 7 Hofstra and No. 3 William & Mary faces No. 6 Drexel.

The winners will move on to Saturday’s 2 p.m. semifinal contests. The CAA men’s championship match is set for 2 p.m. on Sunday. All three of those matches will be played at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center on Elon’s campus.

The Phoenix women earn the No. 2 seed for the second straight season. During the 2016 CAA Championship, Elon defeated No. 7 Drexel in the quarterfinals before falling to No. 3 James Madison in the semifinals.

On the men’s side, the maroon and gold improved its seed from last year moving up a spot to the No. 2 position for the 2017 tournament. The Phoenix will face Hofstra in the CAA tournament quarterfinals for the second straight season. Last season, Elon advanced past the Pride before falling in a heartbreaker against No. 2 College of Charleston in the semifinals.

Admission is free to all four days of the championship, with the men’s and women’s champions both earning automatic bids to the NCAA Tournament.
