Women’s Golf: HPU Breaks School Record on Second Day of Big South Champs

NINETY SIX, S.C.—The High Point University women’s golf team posted a school-record team score and moved up to a tie for third place on the second day of the Big South Championships Tuesday (April 18) at the Patriot at Grand Harbor (Par 72 – 6,045 yards) in Ninety Six, S.C.

The Panthers shot a second-round 286, which is the school record for team low round by five strokes and for team low round against par (-2) by seven strokes. The previous record for low round was 291 set at the UNCG Starmount Fall Classic in 2013 and the previous best for low round against par was 5-over set at the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate earlier this spring.

“Today was a lot of fun out there, especially the front 9 when it seemed like we were making birdies left and right,” HPU head coach Alexis Bennett said. “We have been playing smart golf all week but today our execution was outstanding and our good shots were rewarded. We faltered a little in this closing stretch but this is the type of round I knew we were capable of all season. It’ll be an exciting finish but the girls are fired up and ready to get back out there tomorrow.”

All five Panthers shot at least two strokes better than they did on Monday and three shot under par. Freshman Samantha Vodry sits in a tie for third overall after shooting 3-under 69 on Tuesday. It ties her best round of the season and is one stroke off the school record.

Senior Danielle Fuss and junior Cayla Smith both shot 1-under 71 and are tied for 13th overall at 4-over. Freshman Tonrak Tasaso shot 3-over 75 and is tied for 24th at 8-over. Freshman Anna-Marie Kuenzle was four strokes better than the first round, shooting 11-over 83.

The third and final round will be played Wednesday (April 19). The Panthers will start play at 8 a.m.
