College Women’s Lacrosse Final – #2 Washington and Lee 15, Guilford 4

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Second-ranked Washington and Lee University posted a 15-4 women’s lacrosse win at Guilford College Saturday to extend its winning streak to eight games.

Mimi McCowatt, one of three three-goal scorers for the Generals (12-1, 6-0 ODAC), fueled an important 10-0 run that spanned the two halves. Guilford’s Amanda Dionne scored 11:46 before halftime to draw the Quakers to within 5-3, but Washington and Lee answered with the next 10 scores to put the game out of reach. The Generals scored five time in the first half’s final minutes to take an 11-3 edge.

Ranked second in this week’s Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Association’s NCAA Division III Poll, the Generals controlled possession by winning 16 of the game’s 20 draw controls and by forcing Guilford (6-9, 2-6 ODAC) into 22 turnovers. Washington and Lee outshot Guilford, 39-8, and had seven different goal scorers. Haley Tucker and Jess Castelo joined McCowatt with three scores. Castelo added an assist to join Sara Holland (1 goal, 3 assists) with a game-high four points. Cordelia Peters picked up a game-high seven ground balls and Tucker collected five draw controls, which led all players. Goalie Elliot Gilbert made one save against four shots in 44 minutes of work.

Dionne’s two goals paced the Quakers’ offense. Summer Fowler, one of five Guilford seniors honored before the game, had a goal and an assist, plus three ground balls. Senior goalie Sammi Milbourn made 12 saves, caused two turnovers and picked up three ground balls.

Coach Sarah Lamphier’s Quakers visit league-rival Shenandoah University next Saturday (4/29) in their final regular-season contest.
