HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University baseball team completed a weekend sweep of Charleston Southern with a 4-2 win over the Buccaneers on Sunday afternoon at Williard Stadium. Redshirt-senior Tim Mansfield continued his scorching hot weekend, going 3-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.

“It was huge to get the sweep this weekend,” head coach Craig Cozart said. “Charleston Southern is a good ballclub. I am proud of the determination showed by the guys to get this done. We got some timely hitting and our bullpen was very good. I am excited to see that we are continuing to improve as a team as we head towards the postseason.”

Junior Rion Murrah got the win for the Panthers with 3-1/3 scoreless innings of work out of the bullpen, improving to 3-0 on the season. Murrah allowed just one hit while striking out three in the contest.

Kyle Dyson took the loss and dropped to 1-3 on the season for CSU. Dyson pitched 5-2/3 innings and allowed three runs, two earned, on eight hits and a walk while striking out one.

The weekend sweep was the first of the season for the Panthers and it improved their record to 25-18 overall and 12-9 in the Big South. Charleston Southern drops to 21-23 overall and 9-12 in conference play.

The Buccaneers got the scoring started with a run in the first on an RBI single by Brandon Gragilla to take an early 1-0 lead in the contest.

Mansfield single-handily put the Panthers on the board in the fourth, tying the game at 1-1. The designated hitter led off the HPU half of the inning with a double then stole third and scored when the catcher’s throw sailed into the outfield.

After Charleston Southern retook the lead with a run on a wild pitch in the fifth, HPU came back with two runs in the sixth to go in front, 3-2. The Panthers tied the game when Zente scored on an error by the CSU center fielder and took the lead on an RBI single from senior Josh Greene to score Mansfield.

High Point tacked on an insurance run in the seventh as Mansfield delivered his third hit of the day, an RBI single, that drove in sophomore Conner Dunbar.

Seven of the nine HPU starters recorded at least one hit in the game, led by Mansfield’s three-hit effort. Juniors Hunter Lee and Jordan Sergent both finished 2-4 on the day to join Mansfield with multiple hits.

High Point plays its final midweek game of the season on Tuesday, May 9, when the team travels to Winston-Salem, N.C., to take on Wake Forest. The Panthers dropped the first meeting between the two sides, 18-8, at Williard Stadium. First pitch in the game is set for 6 p.m.
