  1. FYI – Aaron Wilkerson competes in the throwing events. He is currently tied #14 all-time in NC history in the shot put (#4 all-time indoor). He now owns Southern Guilford’s HS shot put and discus school records – 61’3″ and 151’9″.

  2. Good call on Wilkerson, I had never heard of him before and it is good to get to know more about these outstanding young Guilford County athletes…

I remember following the shot put numbers back in the mid-70’s and the kid back then Mike Salzano, from Northern Durham was throwing the shot right at 63 feet back then and he had the state records for a long time…He might have had some of the records in the disc too…I knew a kid at my old school and his name was John Morris and he was throwing the disc 148 feet at that time and at that time, that was pretty good…

Most of the numbers that I have seen this year have been nowhere near what Wilkerson has been doing and he must be blowing the competition away when it comes to the locals….

On the national scene, Al Feurbach was the man in the shot put back in the old days….

  3. There was a guy named Brian Olfield, I think it was, what was a pretty colorful guy in the shot too back in the day…They all used to wear crazy T-shirts back in those days…..

  4. Feuerbach for Al Feuerbach and he threw 71 feet and it was Brian Oldfield and I was close on that one, and Oldfield threw the shot 75 feet…

Good memories of these personalities from the past and Oldfield died in March of this year at the age of 71…

  5. Two more of those field names from the past that came to mind were Al Oerter and Mac Wilkins…

I’m thinking Oerter and Wilkins were both with the discus, but Oerter might have been with the shot…

  6. Both Oerter and Wilkins were outstanding in the discus….Oerter hit 245 feet in the discus….Oerter just like Brian Oldfield, died at age 71….

Some great names from the past and I remembered them all and followed them all back when I was a kid in the 70’s……

Sports names and legends never really die, they just take a break and come back swinging….
