Barrett, Homers Lead Elon Baseball to Victory in Regular-Season Finale

ELON, N.C. – In what was a scheduled doubleheader, the Elon University baseball team used a five-run first inning and a strong pitching performance from Jordan Barrett in game one to cruise to a 9-2 victory over the visiting Bowling Green Falcons on Friday afternoon. With one out in that contest, heavy rain and lightning moved in to the area, forcing the cancellation of the nightcap.

Box Score | Play-by-Play

Barrett (4-4) picked up the win for Elon (24-30) after tossing 7.0 innings and allowing just one unearned run on four hits. He did not issue a walk and struck out nine hitters. Kyle Brnovich threw the final 1.2 frames, striking out two.

At the plate, Elon got a trio of home runs, including a pair from Will Nance. Nance ended the day 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI. Hayden Platt also homered in a 1-for-3, three-RBI game. Kyle Jackson added three hits, scored twice and drove in one.

Bowling Green (15-34) saw starter Zac Carey (4-6) take the loss. Carey was touched up for six runs on six hits in 7.0 innings.

Jake Wilson had two of the seven Falcon hits and was the lone Bowling Green player with a multi-hit performance.

How It Happened: Bowling Green scored an unearned run in the top of the first only to see Elon respond with a five-spot in the bottom half. The first four Phoenix hitters reached as Zach Evers walked, Ryne Ogren singled, Jackson had an RBI double and Platt belted a three-run homer to center. With one out, Nance made it 5-1 by also going deep to center.

It remained a 5-1 contest until the last of the seventh when Nance led off with his second long ball of the game, this one to left. The Phoenix then added three more in the eighth to make it 9-1. With one down, Elon loaded the bases with an Ogren double, Jackson single and a hit batter. Ty Adcock then delivered a pair of runs with a single to left-center. Nance added a third RBI with a fielder’s choice that scored pinch-runner Tyler Stanley.

The Falcons added one run in the ninth when Blake Jenkins singled home pinch-runner Mitchell Schneider before the storms cancelled the remainder of play.

Notes: Elon ends the regular season on a three-game winning streak… Ogren recorded his 21st double of the year to move in to a tie for third on the program’s single-season chart… Barrett’s nine strikeouts give him 98 on the year, while Brnovich’s two K’s pushed his season total to 96, those numbers rank sixth and tied for ninth on Elon’s single-season records list, respectively… Brnovich also matched Elon’s NCAA Division I freshman record of 96 strikeouts.

On Deck: Elon will enter next week’s CAA Tournament as the sixth seed and will play at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, May 24.
