Coach Whitman coached the great running back Joe McIntosh at Lexington, and McIntosh, ironically played at N.C. State, the same school Coach Whitman attended and he coached the outstanding high school quarterback Deems May, who later starred at North Carolina and went on to become a starting tight end in the NFL, for the San Diego Chargers…

HIGH POINT – Coach Gary Dean Whitman, 72, resident of Thomasville, died June 4, 2017, at Hospice Home at High Point.

Coach Whitman was born August 11, 1944 in Clinton County, PA., a son to the late Willard D. and Betty Barrett Whitman. He graduated from Lock Haven High School in 1962 and attended North Carolina State University on a football scholarship, graduating in 1967.

Coach Whitman spent 44 years coaching football with a career record of 292-149-1. His coaching tenure spanned several high schools, including Wilson Fike, Pine Forest, Southern Nash, Lexington, Winter Haven (Florida), High Point Central and McMichael. He won NCHSAA State Championships in 1985, 1986 and 1999, and was a state finalist in 1995. In addition, he also spent many years coaching tennis, winning NCHSAA State Championships 1986, 1987 and 1991, and was a state finalist in 1988. When he wasn’t teaching and coaching, he loved to play tennis and golf.
