Track and Field’s Hames Ready to Represent Elon Phoenix at NCAA Championships

ELON, N.C. – Junior Bryanna Hames of the Elon University women’s track and field team will represent the Phoenix in Eugene, Ore., at the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, becoming the first athlete of the program to compete at the national meet. The meet will take place on June 7-10 at the historic Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon.

Hames will compete in the discus throw on Saturday, June 10. That event is scheduled to begin at 6:05 p.m. EST.

Elon Prelims
• Hames becomes the first Elon athlete to compete at the NCAA Championships in school history after advancing to the national meet at the NCAA East Prelims on May 26 in Lexington, Ky.
• The Charlotte, N.C., native finished 11th at the NCAA East Preliminaries after entering the meet at No. 22 in the region. She broke her own school-record in the discus with a throw of 174′ 6″ (53.20m), the fourth time that Hames has broken her school-record in the discus this season.
• Hames will be one of 24 athletes competing in the discus throw featuring among the best athletes in the nation. The top eight finishers of the event earn first team All-American accolades while the next eight are named to the second team.
• Hames becomes the first Elon athlete to compete at an NCAA Championship event as an individual since Luis Vargas ’15 did so at the NCAA Cross Country Championships in the fall of 2014. Vargas would go on to earn All-American honors at the meet.

Last Time Out
Hames was one of three athletes that competed at the NCAA East Preliminaries at the University of Kentucky on May 25-27. Fellow discus thrower Bre’anna Warren and distance runner Kimberly Johansen also represented the Phoenix at the regional round.

Johansen concluded her career with a new personal and school-record in the quarterfinal round in the 1,500-meters. The Chelmsford, England, native clocked a time of 4:18.42 and finished 15th overall in the race after entering the meet ranked No. 39 among 48 qualifiers in the region.

In her first competition at the NCAA East Preliminaries, Warren was 42nd overall in the discus throw. The Greensboro, N.C., native finished with a throw of 146′ 10″ (44.77m).
