The Second Weekend of Powerade State Games Competition Begins

DURHAM, North Carolina – The Powerade State Games of North Carolina’s Track & Field Meet concluded on Sunday, June 4th, with Masters & Open competition at the American Hebrew Academy. On Saturday, June 3rd, the Powerade State Games Youth Meet set a record with 1,698 participants at North Carolina A&T State University. Combined with the Masters & Open, a record 1,849 athletes competed in the Powerade State Games Track Meet this year.

Records were set on the track and the field as well. In the Youth Meet, a staggering twenty-eight Powerade State Games records were broken. In the Masters & Open Meet, sixteen Powerade State Games records were broken. This is the 31st year of the Powerade State Games, and Track & Field has been a sport every year. Most notably, Scott Houston, former Northwest Guilford, UNC and Indiana pole vaulter, cleared 18’1”, more than 2 feet over the previous Powerade State Games record set back in 1995 by Jason Johnson at 16’3/4”. He also just missed on clearing the Olympic standard at 18’8¾”. Scott is currently the assistant coach at High Point University and a native of Oak Ridge, NC.

Another very notable accomplishment came when Andre Clark qualified for the IAAF World Championships in London by running a 49.24 in the 400m Long Hurdles. The entry standard for the IAAF World Championships is 49.35, so Andre qualified by eleven hundredths of a second. The IAAF World Championships will take place in London from August 4th-13th, 2017.
