Elon’s Hames Concludes Season at NCAA Women’s Track and Field Championships

EUGENE, Ore. – Junior Bryanna Hames of the Elon University women’s track and field team concluded her stay at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships finishing 21st and receiving honorable mention accolades in the discus throw on Saturday, June 10, at historic Hayward Field at the University of Oregon.

The Charlotte, N.C., native registered a best throw of 161’ 10” (49.32m) at the national meet as she represented the Phoenix in her and the program’s first-ever trip to the NCAA Championships.

“I believe that (Bryanna) has so much more in her and she had an amazing year,” said Elon director of track and field and cross country Mark Elliston. “I have a strong feeling that she will be back here next year after gaining some valuable experience on this big stage.”

After throwing a 154’ 9” (47.18m) on her first attempt in the opening flight, Hames rebounded with her best throw on the second attempt. However, her third and final attempt hit the right side of the cage, but still landed inside the sector for a measurement. The setback caused her to fall to 11th overall before settling at 21st at the conclusion of the event.

“The competition was very intense, but I felt good throughout,” said Hames. “The weather was up and down with the rain, but thankfully it calmed down a little bit before the start of competition. I thought all of my throws were good and felt that my last one was the best even though it unfortunately went in the cage. I’m grateful for the experience that’s now under my belt and hopefully can come back here next season and have a really big throw.”

Hames ends her terrific junior campaign as the school record holder in both the discus and outdoor shot put. She also earned All-Colonial Athletic Association honors in both events and now finishes the season as an honorable mention performer at the NCAA Championships.

“It was really exciting that I was able to make history and put Elon on the map,” Hames added. “I, of course, wish that I did better and done more, but I’m not disappointed in the season that I had. I felt that I made a lot of progress, but there’s a lot more to grow from here. Just very grateful to have made it here and to represent my team and my university at this stage in our sport. Hopefully it can inspire my teammates to know that they can make it this far as well.”
