Elon’s Barrett Selected by Blue Jays in MLB Draft

ELON, N.C. – With the 23rd pick in the 18th round of the 2017 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, the Toronto Blue Jays selected Elon senior left-handed pitcher Jordan Barrett. He was the 549th player chosen overall.

With Barrett’s selection, Elon has now had at least one player selected in the MLB Draft in 10 of the last 11 seasons.

“I was almost in shock,” said Barrett. “I was actually eating lunch when they called. There were about 10 picks to go after they had called and it was the longest three minutes ever. I’m pumped to go to this organization. (Former Elon pitcher and 2016 Toronto draftee) Chris Hall has had nothing but good things to say about them since joining them. I’ll report to minicamp on Friday.”

Barrett, who hails from Margate, Fla., served as a team captain for the 2017 season. He made 17 appearances on the mound, including 13 starts, and posted a 4-5 record with a 3.22 ERA. In 78.1 innings Barrett struck out 100 hitters, ranking third in the Colonial Athletic Association. His strikeout total marked the sixth-best single season by an Elon pitcher in program history. The lefty held opponents to a .204 batting average, tied for third in the conference. Barrett was named the CAA Pitcher of the Week after he tossed 8.1 innings and struck out 16 in appearances vs. Radford and #12 Clemson. In that win over Radford, Barrett allowed one run on two hits, while striking out a career-high 13 hitters. The senior was a part of CAA history as he combined with George Kirby to throw the first-ever no-hitter in CAA Tournament play.

Over his two seasons with the Phoenix, Barrett went 7-11 with a 4.50 ERA. He struck out 164 hitters in 154.0 innings and held opponents to a .241 batting average. He picked off nine runners in two seasons.
