Seven former HPT HiToms get Drafted

7 Former HiToms Get Drafted

After the 2017 baseball draft was over, 7 former HiToms in total were selected by major league clubs.

First to go was Drew Ellis in round 2 at 44th overall. The Arizona Diamondbacks selected the hot bat out of Louisville. Ellis had 3 home runs in 2 super regional games and is looking to get the Cardinals their 1st ever CWS Championship. Ellis played for the HiToms in 2015.

In round 5, the Cincinatti Reds selected Mac Sceroler out of SE Louisiana with the 137th overall pick. In a HiTom uniform, Mac had a 4-2 record with a 2.91 ERA. In 8 starts and 11 appearances he pitched in 55.2 innings in the CPL. He gave up 18ER, 21 BB’s, and 53 strikeouts in the 2015 season.

Next for the HiToms, Wichita State’s Austin Gardner who played for the HiToms from 2015-2016, was drafted by the New York Yankees 272nd overall in round 9. In his time with the HiToms, Austin had an overall ERA of 2.71 in 9 starts and 1 relief effort. He threw 62 innings while giving up 61 hits, 19 ER, 9 BB, and 55 K’s.

Teddy Hoffman was selected in round 15 by the Detroit Tigers 455th overall. The Texas State Bobcat played for the HiToms the last two seasons. In 2015, he played in just 6 games but had 5 hits including a home run. In 2016, he managed a .295 batting average with 26 hits, 3HR, and 12 RBI’s.

The next HiTom off the board was Ben Spitznagel. Ben was drafted 801 overall by the Oakland Athletics. When not playing at UNC-Greensboro, he played in 6 games for the HiToms while having 6 hits in 23 at bats while scoring 5 runs.

Texas A&M’s Kaylor Chafin who played for the HiToms this past season, was chosen by the New York Mets in round 32, 967th overall. Chafin threw 7.1 innings with the HiToms and had an ERA of 2.45.

And last but certainly not least, Zac Almond was scooped up by the Diamondbacks in the 35th round to join Ellis. Almond, in 46 games with the HiToms, had a .269 average. He also had 47 hits, 41 RBIs, and was 11-13 on the basepaths.
