Phillips claims first AJGA victory via playoff

Defending champion Hong finishes runner up

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Trent Phillips dropped a 12-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole to win, after Eugene Hong tapped in for par. This is the University of Georgia verbal commit’s first AJGA victory. He is currently No. 33 in the AJGA Rankings. He carded two birdies and an eagle during his final round.

“It’s hard to beat him,” Phillips speaks of Hong. “He’s a phenomenal talent and being able to beat him is sweet.”

Phillips of Inman, South Carolina, carded a 1-under-par 69 for a tournament-total 6-under-par 274, while Hong of Orlando, Florida, shot an even-par 70 during the final round.

On what the win means Phillips said “It’s a great course, really tough venue to play so anytime you come out here and get it done, you can really stack your game up with some really high end players. So that’s pretty awesome to do.”

Hong, a University of Florida verbal commit, was the 2016 Haas Family Invitational presented by BB&T champion and is No. 6 in the AJGA Rankings.

Logan McAllister, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, shot the low round of the day, firing a 5-under-par 65 to finish T6.

North Carolina Player Update

Fulton Smith of Pinehurst, North Carolina, shot a 2-under-par 68 for a tournament-total 281. The Wake Forest University verbal commit finished T10 and best of the eight other North Carolina natives.
