Former HPU Men’s Basketball Standout Weary Signs with Bristol Flyers

HIGH POINT, N.C. — Former High Point University men’s basketball standout Adam Weary (Class of 2016) has signed a professional contract with the Bristol Flyers for the 2017-18 season. The Bristol Flyers play in the British Basketball League.

“I am extremely excited for Adam and his family,” HPU head coach Scott Cherry said. “He had a goal of playing professional basketball and he has achieved that. He has fought through a lot of adversity and worked really hard to reach this point.

“We will always be grateful for all his efforts to elevate this program. I wish him all the best as he enters the next phase of his life.”

Weary played 116 for the Purple & White and aided the Panthers in winning four-consecutive Big South regular season championships from 2013-16.

“I really want to bring that winning mentality to Bristol, and you do that by being a good teammate, staying humble and showing that you really care about the team’s success,” Weary told bristolflyers.co.uk.

The 6-3 guard averaged 10.8 points per game and tallied 1,258 points, 297 assists and 115 steals. His 297 career assists rank fifth all-time in Panther history.

The Memphis, Tenn., native was named to the 2016 All-Big South Second Team and was a member of the Big South All-Freshman Team in 2013. Weary suffered a serious injury in the Big South tournament his senior season, cutting short a season in which he averaged a career-high 12.4 points per game, but rehabilitated in High Point during the last year.

Weary joins a long line of Panthers that have joined the professional ranks after playing under Cherry. Weary’s 2016 classmates, John Brown (Acea Virtus Roma – Italy) and Lorenzo Cugini (Omnia Basket Lungavilla Pavia– Italy), both played professionally last season.

Other recent Panther pros have included Eugene Harris (’10 – KTE-Duna Aszfalt – Hungary), Tehran Cox (’11 – Libya), Corey Law (’12 – Harlem Globetrotters), Nick Barbour (’12 – Texas Legends – NBA D-League) and Devante Wallace (’15 – WBC Raiffeisen Wels – Austria).
