ELON, N.C. – Elon University men’s tennis sophomore Jacob Bicknell competed for his home country of Jamaica in the Davis Cup Americas Group III competition from June 12-17 in Montevideo, Uruguay. It marked the first time in his career he played for his country.

In the event, he posted an overall record of 4-4 in both singles and doubles, going 2-2 in singles and 2-2 in doubles. Bicknell impressed with singles wins over Gavin Manders of Bermuda – a 6-3, 7-5 victory – and against Cordell Williams of Antigua & Barbuda – a solid 6-1, 6-0 win.

In doubles action, Bicknell paired with Rowland Phillips and earned a 6-4, 6-2 win over Jenson Bascome and Jovan Witter of Bermuda and a 7-5, 7-6 win over Carlton Bedminster and Jody Maginley of Antigua & Barbuda.

Overall, Jamaica went 2-2 in the event. It defeated Bermuda 3-0 and Antigua & Barbuda 2-1, but fell 3-0 to Puerto Rico and 2-1 to Honduras. Finishing third in the pool, Jamaica narrowly missed the cut to move into the play-off phase of the event with only the top two teams from each pool advancing.

In his first season with the Phoenix, he posted a 7-4 record after joining the team in January. Over the course of the season, he went 5-2 at No. 6 singles before moving up to No. 5 to post a 2-2 mark.
