Game Report on HPT HiToms vs. Holly Springs Salamanders:
HiToms Win 6-5 In Front of Record Crowd

By: Rich Borland/’Borland on the Bench’

The HiToms came into the 4th of July undefeated in the 2nd half and their record stayed that way after a close victory against the Holly Springs Salamanders in a record crowd at Finch Field of 3,750.

The Salamanders struck first off of 2017 CPL All-Star Clay Young on an error committed by Mason McClellan after a leadoff double off the bat of Jacob Jaye.

The Salamanders took the 2-0 lead in the top of the 4th when Zach Piazza hit a solo shot.

It was the HiToms who took charge the rest of the way. In the home half of the 4th, Mason McClellan singled and then Jordan Howard drove him in with an RBI single, followed by a sacrifice bunt from Jason Allbery that brought in Evan Edwards who reached on a hit by pitch to tie the game at two.

The HiToms widened their lead in the sixth, scoring four runs with two outs after Howard tripled, Allbery was hit by a pitch. Two walks in a row led to another hit by pitch, which set the stage for Cody Grosse to drive in two runs which gave the HiToms the 6-2 lead.

In the 9th, Jake Wyrick came into pitch. The first batter was retired on a groundout to Edwards at 1st, but then tension began to build. Wyrick gave up a one out walk followed by a two run homerun to cut the HiTom lead to just two.

Following the home run, a one out single led to a flyout to centerfield. After a walk, Wyrick stayed in the game but gave up an RBI single to cut the lead to just one run. Finally, a flyout to right field ended the Salamander threat and the HiToms won 6-5 on the 4th of July.

The HiToms remain undefeated in the second half at 2-0, while moving past .500 at 15-14 overall. Waylon Richardson earned the victory he moves to (1-4) while Ryan Lefner received the L and moves to (0-2) on the year. The HiToms are back home to face the Martinsville Mustangs at 7pm at home on Thursday.
