*****The T. Wingate Andrews High School Athletic Department would like to announce the resignation of its Head Football Coach John Patterson. Patterson is a High Point native and a 1976 graduate of T. Wingate Andrews High School.*****

Coach John Patterson led the Red Raider football program for one season serving from April 2016 until July 2017. His record during his tenure was 8-5, which included a PAC-6 2A conference championship, PAC-6 conference coach of the year honors, and a NCHSAA 2A Mid-East second round appearance.

Coach Patterson is officially retiring from coaching football and will return to Charleston SC to be with his family. We are looking forward to building on the legacy of Red Raider Athletics, as we begin the search of our next football coach.

Gotta believe Andrews AD Derek Anderson is going to have to coach the team on an interim basis this season. Almost impossible to get anybody from outside at this late date, and hearing that some of the assistants were Patterson’s guys and walked with him. Too bad for the kids, but also hearing they were part of the problem.

  • Andy Durham said,

Coach Anderson has coached at HP Andrews as the head football coach before, but now I think he would have to name himself as the head football coach and then step down as the AD…

There’s that Guilford County Rule, that says the AD’s can not coach a sport….

Unless the GCS decides to make an exception with the start of the season being upon us and Andrews not having many assistants left in the locker room…

Tough spot if other assistants have left and the cupboard appears to be bare, where does HP Andrews go from here….

Practice set to begin on Monday July 31…..

This seems to be the year of transition in Guilford County. At this point, it’s about making the process as smooth for the student-athletes as possible. With the proper guidelines in place, transition can be easy

Certain coaches have little regard for the student-athletes lives they “influence.” I remind my son every single day, “look at the coaching changes county-wide as men doing what is best for their families. Always put your family first.”

I have learned a great deal from each coaching change; every situation has been a learning moment. It is about a person’s home. I thank each coach for doing what he thought is best for his home.
