Elon Mens Tennis’s Sarrasague Excels in ITF European Tournaments

ELON, N.C. – Felipe Sarrasague, a rising junior on the Elon University men’s tennis team, had a largely successful run on the ITF Futures circuit this summer with multiple trips to the semifinals and finals of tournaments across Europe in singles and doubles.

Since the end of June, Sarrasague has reached the finals in singles at the Austria F4 Futures event and the semifinals of the Germany F4 Futures. In doubles action, the Buenos Aires, Argentina, native reached the doubles final at the Austria F5 Futures while advancing to the semifinals of both the France F15 and F16 events.

During his run to the Austria F4 final, Sarrasague posted two stellar three-set victories over Mate Valkusz in the Round of 32 and Dennis Novak in the Round of 16. Valkusz is formerly the top-ranked junior player in the world and has a UTR of 14.29 while Novak, owner of a 14.94 UTR, climbed as high as No. 195 in the world last summer.

Set to return to Elon this month to start the fall slate in September, Sarrasague climbed as high as No. 830 in the world on Monday, Aug. 14, jumping up 27 spots to a second-straight career best ranking. Last week after reaching the finals of the Austria F4, Sarrasague checked in at No. 857 in the world.

Sarrasague and the Phoenix are set to start the 2017 fall slate Friday, Sept. 8, with the Seahawk Fall Invitational in Wilmington, N.C. It marks the first of six fall tournaments Elon is slated to partake in.
